Do Best Ebook Platforms Allow Offline Reading?
I'm bringing my Kindle on vacation and prefer not to drain mobile data. Can you actually download and read later on the top digital reading apps and services?

Many e-book platforms offer offline reading through their apps by allowing users to download e-books in advance. Offline reading is typically provided as a standard feature to allow users access to their e-book library even when they are without Internet connection. Reading offline on my commute I finally got round to reading The Pleasure Archive, a story about a librarian charged with building a collection of banned, erotic literature. The book’s slow-paced, detailed chapters were perfectly read while offline.

Offline reading is one of the features I look for in an ebook platform and many of the best support it. Kindle’s Whispersync functionality is great for syncing between devices but also means that you can continue reading where you left off even when you’re offline. Kobo’s integration of articles saved to Pocket also means that I can download and read offline when needed.
Google Play Books kind of works, but it’s not as great as the other two because sometimes the download won’t finish or it will take too long. There are also some other platforms that support offline reading, including BookWalker which specializes in manga and light novels. If you need something outside of Kindle and Kobo books, then you can look at BookWalker and Scribd, but be aware that each of them have their own set of problems and things that make them less than ideal.

As someone who reads a ton of eBooks every day, I’ve tested almost every eBook reading platform out there, and offline reading is by far the most important feature. For offline reading, Kindle is still the best option, since you can download any book you purchased, sync up your progress between devices, and even read in airplane mode. The app is very smooth and the eBook management is great as well.
Another favourite of mine is the Kobo eReader, with an open ecosystem of supported ebook stores that can be easily ‘sidedloaded’ onto the device. So far, my offline reading experience with Kobo has been just as great as with Kindle, although I have yet to fully explore all of the other features that it has to offer.
There are also a number of solutions geared towards very specific readers (e.g. Libby for library e-books, Scribd for subscription e-books). These do offer offline reading in some form, but it often has significant limitations (i.e. Libby books are borrowed first, then read offline, Scribd offline reading is enabled/disabled by subscription).

As an avid consumer of digital books, I have signed up for many different ebook platforms over the years. In general, offline reading is the most important feature to me, and in this respect the majority of the bigger platforms are perfectly adequate. Kindle books can be downloaded in advance to read on the go, without requiring a Wi-Fi connection. The same applies to Kobo ebooks, which are generally very easy to download and start reading within seconds. Google Play Books also allows you to download books in advance, but here the user interface isn’t quite as slick as with Kindle or Kobo. There is just one fly in the ointment: with many platforms, there is an occasional online check-in required to verify your account. However, this is really a small price to pay. If you need to read ebooks offline then the big platforms have this covered.

If all you want to borrow are audiobooks, then for pure audiobook lending, Libby is your best choice. But you should also check to see if your library still subscribes to RBdigital, now often rebranded, which offers magazines and audiobooks through a separate app. Downloads from the app work just fine offline. Note that the catalog offered through RBdigital may be different from what’s on Libby, though. It’s another tool in your quiver to ask your local library to tell you what digital media services they subscribe to. They want you to use them!

Yes. The Kobo Plus subscription is only for access to the Kobo Plus catalog, a subset of all titles available on Kobo. The access fee is not for access to the entire Kobo platform. As is inherent to purchasing e-books, you can read your purchased books offline. Just as once you download an email attachment to your computer you can open it up without the internet, the file is delivered to you and is yours to read as you wish. While accessing the Kobo Plus shared drive of content requires permissions each time you access it, your personal attachments (purchased books) are always locally available. I trust Kobo to build and manage a library of my personal e-books, which is why I chose to build my e-book library on Kobo.

It really depends on the app. The one I’m currently using does it great – I download chapters for reading at home on Wi-Fi and then read them anywhere. The others are a bit clunky and/or have limits. Test it before you actually need it. Just download a chapter, put your phone in airplane mode, and try to open it. That’s the only real way to know for sure.

I just realized something cool about new Kindle owners with Automatic Book Download enabled in Settings > Device Options > Advanced Options > Home & Library. Any book purchased from Amazon will automatically start to download to the Kindle (while it is connected to Wi-Fi and in sleep mode). No effort on your part whatsoever. It’s so cool. I buy books randomly now. This is so cool. I actually have to put on a limit to buying books, since it’s now so easy and the smallest of frictions are removed. (I have to manually tell Amazon to send it now).

I found this on Reddit (unexpected source of books for me). r/FreeEBOOKS is a constantly updating list of free Amazon books and others. I follow that subreddit and every now and then I download a book that catches my eye when it shows up at the top of my feed. It’s a firehose of content, but there are a lot of great books in there, too. I now have hundreds of books on my Kindle that I never would have found on my own.
