I just realized something cool about new Kindle owners with Automatic Book Download enabled in Settings > Device Options > Advanced Options > Home & Library. Any book purchased from Amazon will automatically start to download to the Kindle (while it is connected to Wi-Fi and in sleep mode). No effort on your part whatsoever. It’s so cool. I buy books randomly now. This is so cool. I actually have to put on a limit to buying books, since it’s now so easy and the smallest of frictions are removed. (I have to manually tell Amazon to send it now).

Hoopla is a borrowing app that provides users with access to a wide variety of digital content. Users borrow and download content for a specific amount of time, all within the Hoopla app. Since borrowing digital content typically involves the download of a copy to a user’s device for a loan period of time, offline reading of borrowed material is not only possible but typically the primary way in which users read their borrowed material. Hoopla does not stream books page by page, and thus offline reading of all borrowed material is 100% possible and the typical manner in which material is used within the service. Therefore, anyone who states that offline reading is not possible on Hoopla is not using the service correctly.

Just a note, check your device storage if a download fails. My Kindle Touch storage fill up unexpectedly and new KU downloads would fail with a generic error message. Had to go into settings and manually remove old samples and finished books to free up space. Also, verify that your Kindle is registered to the same Amazon account as your KU subscription. I’ve had strange issues in the past where I was logged into a family member’s account from the app and couldn’t see my borrows. Otherwise, download function seems to work just fine as long as the basic conditions are met (active sub, correct account, sufficient storage, and current internet connection at time of download).

Yes. The Kobo Plus subscription is only for access to the Kobo Plus catalog, a subset of all titles available on Kobo. The access fee is not for access to the entire Kobo platform. As is inherent to purchasing e-books, you can read your purchased books offline. Just as once you download an email attachment to your computer you can open it up without the internet, the file is delivered to you and is yours to read as you wish. While accessing the Kobo Plus shared drive of content requires permissions each time you access it, your personal attachments (purchased books) are always locally available. I trust Kobo to build and manage a library of my personal e-books, which is why I chose to build my e-book library on Kobo.

Oh the humanity if we couldn't read our books offline, we'd probably revolt. As it stands, offline reading of stories and information is a basic accessibility feature, and (big) companies know that not everyone has reliable, affordable internet connection all the time. They’d like you to read their e-books everywhere, not just when you have phone signal. Which is why they’ve set things up so that by default you get to download the book. The option to Remove Download is secondary, but they want to make it easy for you to experience the better way of reading a book – that which is stored locally on your device and ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Need to read something for free offline? Borrow e-books and graphics from your local library using free app ‘Libby’ or read classics for free on ‘Project Gutenberg’. Also manga is cached for offline reading on ‘Manga Plus’ and e-book EPUB files are read offline with ‘FBReader’. Kindle and Google Play Books also can read books offline too. Simple.

One approach that is sometimes forgotten is that of a personal web server. This could be a home server running in a cupboard (e.g. a Raspberry Pi running Calibre-Web). Any browser or even better an OPDS reader app on your iPad can then be used to browse your local catalog of ebooks and download them to local storage. This is the ultimate self-hosted solution. All your ebooks are accessible from anywhere on your home network, and can be sideloaded into your reading apps on your iPad for offline reading.

The whole Tachiyomi ecosystem was created to fill a very specific technical need, namely the demand for a unified, offline-capable reading experience for manhwa and other comics. As a result, the many, very detailed tutorials on the best sources for manhwa can be found in the many forums. A number of Discord servers even exist to help set up Tachiyomi for people. Because the official and unofficial websites for comics were so very fragmented and online, the community ended up creating their own ideal solution to read their comics, because the existing platforms didn’t even begin to meet this very persistent need.

Has McGraw-Hill ever issued a press release on this policy, explaining the reasons behind it beyond the savings of preventing piracy? Are there any pedagogical studies backing up the idea of locking up content? Or is this simply another money-making decision by a for-profit educational corporation? (So far, they’re not commenting on this.)

This never even occurred to me. I have lots of AO3 .txt files on my Kindle. The model for this sort of thing feels so normal to me – just like recording TV shows on the DVR, authors get hits and kudos when you download their work to read, and you can then read it whenever you like.
However, I would be concerned if stripping the author’s notes and metadata from the work was considered unethical. As it is, the .txt download includes all of that, so it feels respectful to me. Of course, if an author said that they’d prefer that people didn’t download their works, I’d respect their wishes, but until then, on AO3, there is permission for downloading the works.
