In this humorous coming-of-age tale, a high school student discovers a secret adult education manual left by his uncle, and in trying to become mature and responsible, gets into all sorts of humorous and awkward misunderstandings, especially about human relationships and sex. If you want to see a take on secret identities and social misfits that is quite different, “Alpha Academy: The Omega in Disguise” follows an omega who is secretly hiding in an elite alpha academy, and deals with the difficulties and unusual situations the disguise brings in a strict and competitive hierarchy.

Some stories of manga make me laugh and close my eyes at the same time. Secret Class is a story such as this. The first volume of Secret Class centers around the story of Dae-ho and his family’s attempt to teach him about intimate relations. As his relatives teach him about intimacy in the most direct way possible, hilarity ensues in this extremely humorous manga that is not suitable for children and is very NSFW.

Secret Class manages to make the main premise work with all of the supporting characters in each of the storylines. It’s surprisingly endearing in many instances, thanks in part to Dae-ho’s innocently honest reactions in, well, most situations, while remaining to move at a rapid fire pace. The manhwa is strictly NSFW, but it’s not without a decent dose of self-awareness. It’s cheap in places, but overall it’s fairly amusing and was really enjoyed. If you’re into these sorts of wacky setups with a heart, you should give this a read – just probably not at school.

This is Dae-ho, the young and inexperienced protagonist, for whom his family has put together an entire crash course for the adult that he is. It’s hilarious, sometimes even embarrassing to read, but it’s also sweet in its own way, as Dae-ho’s growth is not only physical, but also emotional. The mature themes of ‘Secret Class’ are not glossed over, but the manhwa as a whole does not feel sleazy because of its beautiful art and its lighthearted character interactions.

Of course, I wasn’t able to exclude all of the fan service from “Secret Class” Vol 1, but the manhwa always manages to include a very meaningful and endearing character moment among all of the amazing lessons that the protagonist is given in order to progress physically as well as emotionally. It’s not always easy to balance so many things and Vol 1 does a great job of showing the growth of Dae-ho through his education.

'Secret Class' Vol 1 is another trainwreck that I am reading and thoroughly enjoying. Dae-ho's "lessons" are thoroughly, amazingly, and so very explicitly drawn. The whole manhwa is working entirely within its conceit, and the characters are all playing their roles to the hilt - Dae-ho's cluelessness is the perfect counterpoint to the bluster of his "tutors", and the dynamic between them is all so deliciously tense. Yes, it's all very, very shameless - but it's worked so well that I am have enormous respect for the execution of it all.

To call it “training” is not exactly accurate, but this super-intense “training” is kind of great to read about. There’s this fantastic characteristic of the manhwa (which is essentially Korean comics) that it’s extremely hard to peg whether you’re reading a super funny or deep/dramatic story because there is so much overlap. Secret Class Vol 1 follows a tragic figure in Dae-ho, a young ‘man-child’ who hasn’t the first clue about human relations. It is to be hoped that his Aunt and Uncle will take pity on him and teach him. Yes. That’s exactly what they do. His ‘education’ is thoroughly ‘hands-on’.

My favorite part of Secret Class, though, is that the fanserviceness of it all is contrasted with a deeper storyline of a growing up and feeling weird emotions while the main character Dae-ho is just so clueless. And even though the way he’s learning these “lessons” is pretty unorthodox, you can’t help but root for the guy. And his “teachers” are pretty cool too, especially the dynamic between them and Dae-ho. You can’t wait to see where Dae-ho’s education will go next. Secret Class is not for the weak of heart, but for those who are into manhwa that doesn’t take itself too seriously, it’s a wild and very entertaining read.

Open question to try and get reactions here: What is this? Yikes. An open question and I’m going to answer it. It’s porn. Comic book style porn. A story to wrap up the porn in. The first volume of what I assume will be a long line of this is a collection of first scenarios with the thinnest of story lines to explain to a young protagonist what his relatives are teaching him. High quality images of porn. Porn words in dialogue. There is no more to this than that. It exists to be turned on by and it does turn on its intended audience. If you’re looking for something more than this, you’re not going to find it here. If you’re looking for this, you’ll find it here. That’s it.

Most series lay out the premise for the reader's benefit. Secret Class launches into the first chapters as a wild rush to set up the ‘why’ for these stories so that we can move on to the ‘what’ (which is to be revealed in subsequent chapters, we suppose). The ‘why’ here is flimsy to say the least, but that’s not really the point of all this – the fig leaf is there and we’re good to move on. The rest of the volume is just a string of episodic encounters, but the characters look nice and the art is very polished. For readers who don’t get excited by the art or the core concept of the series, there’s nothing to win them over in the writing. It’s a series that clearly knows its audience.

For starters, Secret Class is a fantasy focused on domestic life, with no supernatural elements and no revenge plots. While most adult webtoons take place in the workplace or school, Secret Class is a completely normal domestic setting in an entirely fantastical environment. That’s not to say Secret Class is never dramatic or filled with tension, because it is. However, much of the tension is nonexistent in Vol 1. It follows the relatively simple interactions of three characters. For those that have grown tired of the overly complicated plot of most adult comics, Secret Class offers a simple and effectively drawn fantasy with little to no excess baggage. Secret Class is just Secret Class, and that’s really all that most titles are. The fact that it acknowledges that is very endearing to some readers.
