For me, a truly successful original mystery has to feel like it could slot into a collection between 'The Speckled Band' and 'The Red-Headed League' without raising an eyebrow.

I've read a lot where the mystery is clever but the prose is flat, or the period detail feels researched rather than lived-in. An author I return to is KCS over on Archive of Our Own; their story 'The Adventure of the Aluminum Crutch' nailed the cadence of Watson's narration and had a genuinely perplexing setup with a solution that felt obvious in hindsight, which is the hallmark. Another, 'The Problem of the Three Garridebs' by a different writer, weaves in that lovely, quiet melancholy Holmes sometimes gets between the deductions.

It’s less about shocking twists and more about the logical progression and the character moments those deductions create.

I got obsessed with these for a while, searching for that hit of a new puzzle. The best ones often aren't tagged as 'mystery' first—they're character studies where the case serves the character exploration. There's a short one called 'A Study in Sussex' about an elderly Holmes solving a petty theft in his village that’s more about his mind refusing to idle than about the stakes. The mystery is small, the solution simple, but the path there is so perfectly him.

Otherwise, I'd point you toward novel-length works like 'The Seven-Per-Cent Solution' (which is published, but it's fanfiction in spirit) or certain arcs in the Granada TV series tie-in novels. In pure fan spaces, look for authors who clearly have a background in reading golden-age detective fiction; their plots have better architecture.

Honestly, most original mystery fics I've tried just rehash the show or movie plots with different names. The few that stand out are the crossovers, weirdly enough. There's this one where Holmes is dropped into the 'Knives Out' universe that absolutely works because the tone of a Rian Johnson whodunit fits the methodical dismantling of alibis. The mystery itself was original to the fic, playing with modern forensics against Holmes's classic observation.

It’s hard to find purely original ones in the main fandom tags because the kudos algorithm pushes romance or AUs. You gotta dig into the 'Gen' category and sort by bookmarks, not hits. Even then, half are casefics for established ships, which isn't what you're asking.
