What Are The Best Gender Roles Reversed Manga Series?

Looking for stories where traditional masculine and feminine dynamics are flipped. Prefer shoujo or seinen with strong character development over shallow role swaps. Not sure which titles truly explore this trope well.

‘My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!’ and ‘The Daughter of the Albert House Wishes for Ruin’ are just two examples of many manga titles that feature heroines turning the typical fantasy roles of heroines on their heads. A more recent read of mine, ‘That Prince Is A Girl: The Vicious King’s Captive Slave Mate’ is a web novel that follows a heroine who, in order to survive in a deadly world of politics, disguises herself as a male prince. It’s a great example of how role reversal can create a really interesting and tense survivalist story, and how a heroine can be forced into a facade – in this case, pretending to be a man – and the tension that can come from that being reversed and the other party believing she is actually male.

I really like ‘Princess Jellyfish’. It’s a story where the male lead Kuranosuke is a fashion cross-dresser helping a group of social oddities, all of them female. The main twist on the typical knight in shining armor story is that Kuranosuke’s femininity is what makes him strong, not a silly side of his nature. ‘Princess Jellyfish’ also a really cool take on how society oppresses both males and females, and it’s all wrapped up in a funny and heartwarming story about odd, social misfit characters. It’s a story that shows that it’s okay to be vulnerable and that courage isn’t something that is locked to a male gender.

I LOVE ‘Ouran High School Host Club’. It subverts all the typical shojo tropes with the strong female protagonist Haruhi who is a scholarship student who is forced to work as a male host at a high class school to pay off a debt. She can’t care less about her femininity, and her harrasment and ignorance of the male Hosts is HILARIOUS. Again, it’s not just a story of crossdressing, it’s a very in depth look at how we perform gender and how we view gender.

Another favorite of mine is ‘Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku’. The main female, Narumi, is more interested in gaming than romance, but her counterpart, Hirotaka, is lovely and tries to be supportive. This modern take on relationships really strips away the ‘damsel in distress’ cliche and really gets you thinking as to why these roles are even there in the first place.

As the female lead exercises her analytical mind and demonstrated refusal to be passive, helpless females Maomao is instead depicted to be brilliant and competent. The Apothecary Diaries blends intriguing mystery with period drama to compelling effect.

'_MY ANDROGYNOUS BOYFRIEND_' is a cute, slice-of-life type story. Gorgeous, gender-fluid model Wako is adored by his female partner because he’s truly himself and she loves him for that. Rather than turning the situation on its head, this story explores and celebrates how love can exist outside of boundaries and be completely unique and adoring within the confines of love. The art is beautiful and highly appealing and it’s a very comforting, feel-good story that doesn’t have to get into any heavy drama to be great.

I’ll review ‘Tearmoon Empire’ for you. ‘Tearmoon Empire’ is a funny story about a selfish princess Mia who was reincarnated to die on the guillotine. As a way to survive, Mia uses her knowledge of future, but her motivation to do things is hilariously selfish. Every selfish things she does in order to survive are misinterpreted by others to believe that she is being altruistic and full of compassion, when in reality she is just panicking in order to save her own life.

The twist in her getting to be the person who leads the empire to salvation is that she isn’t anywhere near that level of competency. All the capable men surround her to carry out her inept strategies in many cases, each attributing to her talent in their own way. They have no idea that her only reason for doing anything is because she hopes to keep her head on her shoulders. A beautiful reverse of how things usually are portrayed. The selfish princess has unwittingly become a hero and is surrounded by men who dote on her.

As opposed to a lot of the fantasy recs floating around here, I was looking for a modern take on the office romance and found Konyakusei no Himegoto (The Fiancée's Secret) to be a cute, short read. It’s about a supremely competent female executive who is forced into engagement with the lazy but very pretty heir of a company that the executive’s company is trying to merge with.

The difference in their life goals and the way they split up household chores is played for laughs but is also a sweet exploration of the way that a man can find happiness outside of work and a woman can be successful without having to give up her femininity. It’s a short work and not an epic, but it’s a nice little diversion from the more serious stories I’ve been reading recently.

‘May I Ask For One Final Thing?’ is a great but underappreciated female led story. In this novella, the female lead, Scarlet, is a noble lady who was publicly shamed and betrayed by a number of people, including her soon to be husband. Instead of plotting or crying, she responds to their affronts by physically attacking them.

All the men in the story are scheming, like Scarlet’s betrothed, or overwrought, like the Crown Prince. They’re all words and ego and perfume. Scarlet is direct action. She’s violence. She reverses the typical story of the violent male lead who protects the heroine, and instead is herself the brunt of violence, then turns the tables to be the violent one. It’s a wildly, cathartically over-the-top story, and Scarlet dismantles one corrupt noble after another with her huge amount of charm and brute force. Her would-be-romantic interest is a man who admires her violence, and supports her in it, as opposed to trying to change her in some way.

When talking about raw power fantasies, “The Saga of Tanya the Evil” is probably one of the most thorough ones out there. A modern, disenchanted man gets reincarnated as a little girl in an alternative World War I setting and becomes the most efficient and ruthless military commander in the history of the world.

Her logical and efficient methods in combat greatly resemble that of typical male military protagonists. Although she is a young preteen girl in a role reversal scenario, she is constantly underestimated because of her appearance. Her methods are the focus of the series as well as her battle against what she calls ‘God’. Although gender dynamics are an issue in this series, it is not the primary focus. This is a hardcore military action series with a hyper-competent female lead who uses her unique situation to her full advantage in achieving her goals through the use of tactics as well as other’s sexism.

A fairly straight-forward shoujo with a twist is ‘Mizutama Honey Boy’. The heroine is tall, sporty and a bit messy, whilst the hero is short, cute and delicate. He’s into baking, sewing and generally anything ‘cute’. They live together under a honey-boy type of arrangement where he looks after her and cooks for her, etc. He’s essentially the ‘wife’.

There’s a big difference between her (a rough-around-the-edges, breadwinning part-timer) and him (a domesticated, husband-like cohabitee who’s into baking, sewing, etc). Most of the comedy comes from his inversion of expectations as a male, but he’s not trying to be anything other than himself and she appreciates his appreciation of her, as well as her appreciation of his strengths without any qualms about her lack of femininity. It’s a cute, low-stakes story.
