Success is so subjective. Is it the one that makes fans of the book happiest? 'The Guide' by R.K. Narayan had a film starring Dev Anand that's considered a classic. It took liberties, sure, but it became a landmark in Indian cinema. Sometimes an adaptation needs to become its own thing to stand the test of time.

I'm leaning towards 'Moth Smoke' by Mohsin Hamid, but wait, that hasn't been adapted either. Man, so many great novels are just waiting. Maybe the question should be which novel deserves a great adaptation next.

Anyone else feel like short stories get adapted better than novels? Satyajit Ray's 'Teen Kanya' or 'Mahanagar' come from Tagore short stories. The shorter format gives filmmakers room to expand visually without having to cut huge subplots. Maybe the most successful Indian 'adaptations' aren't of novels at all.

Has anyone mentioned 'The Guru'? No, because it's terrible and not based on an Indian novel. Sorry, just making a joke. This is a fun thread.

Which bestseller Indian novels have been adapted into movies?

I’ve always been fascinated by how Indian novels transform into visual masterpieces. 'Shantaram' by Gregory David Roberts is a gripping tale of an escaped convict finding redemption in Mumbai, though the film adaptation has been in development limbo for years. Then there’s 'The White Tiger' by Aravind Adiga, which became a critically acclaimed Netflix film, capturing the raw essence of class struggle in India. Chetan Bhagat’s '2 States' is another standout, adapted into a sweet, relatable rom-com about cross-cultural love. For historical depth, 'Train to Pakistan' by Khushwant Singh was brought to life with haunting realism. Each adaptation offers a unique lens into the original work, making them worth experiencing in both forms.
