What Are The Best Mpreg Birth Stories On AO3?

I’m very interested in the business aspect of Kindle Unlimited and how it has reshaped the way authors write within this particular genre. For many writers Kindle Unlimited has provided a sustainable income while other writers have been critical of the ‘formulaic’ writing that it encourages. As a reader Kindle Unlimited provides me with an almost endless choice of books to read, all for a flat monthly fee. However, I acknowledge that many of these books contain similar plots and it can take some digging to find the real standouts. As much as I wish there were more space in this commercial genre to let authors to express themselves creatively, I know that most writers have to strike a balance between what they want to write and what their readers expect. So, even though there’s a lot of repetition between books in this genre, it’s wonderful to be able to see an author’s growing style and increasing confidence over the long series of books that they write.

When I’m searching for quality Phan fanfiction (that’s Dan and Phil to those who don’t know) on Archive of Our Own, a lot of the time I have to dig through a lot of mediocre stories to get to the really good stuff. Most of the quality stories I’ve found have been through sorting the fic by kudos, bookmarks, or comments, and then browsing through tags such as ‘Dan and Phil AU’ or ‘Phan Fluff’ (for non-Phan readers, this sort of thing is typically pretty easy to find). While many writers in the Phan fandom do a great job of portraying the two, some individual stories are really, really good at capturing the pair’s relationship, whether that’s in an AU where they’re soulmates, in college, or even in a dystopian future. Many of these stories are hidden amongst others of far fewer hits, and are truly gems. Also note that lots of fandoms (especially this one) have curated collections of fanfiction on Tumblr or Twitter or even just lists of recommended stories. This is how I found some of my absolute favorite comfort fics – there’s a slow-burn coffee shop AU that I read at 2AM and beamed with a large, idiot grin on my face for the rest of the day. Comment and kudos, etc – writers in this fandom work SO HARD for their creative output and need all the love they can get. Many of these stories are actually better written than a published novel, and there is just so much creativity here. Good luck, and I hope you find a whole lot of feels on your new read.

Reading an author's notes on a high-kudos fic is really cool. Sometimes the author will even admit that they were surprised by how the story received, or thank specific early commenters for encouraging them to keep writing. It's really impressive to read, because it really humanizes the number and makes you realize that every fic starts with one person posting a chapter into the void, hopefully to get some sort of reaction from someone. The journey to get to that final number is way more interesting than the number itself.

There’s plenty of listing for ‘male pregnancy’, ‘omegaverse’, ‘mpreg’ on MyAnimeList and Anilist (with most being manga but there might be an anime or two listed too). Lists for those terms can also be found on manga databases like Baka-Updates Manga. A lot of content, often of varying quality and with differing tones, but the filters on the site make searching for niche tropes a lot easier. Be prepared for a large amount of listings and find out if a certain manga is ‘fluff’, ‘angst’ or ‘non-con’ by reading the user reviews and checking the tags.

I’m a very basic reader. I see a fic with Reggie and a dog, I read it. ‘Barking Up the Right Tree’ is a fic where Reggie finds a ghost dog at the Hollywood Ghost Club and then smuggles him out of there. It’s really funny and sweet. Sometimes I don’t want to read some long, dramatic story or some angsty, doomy romance. I just want to read about a ghost boy and his spectral golden retriever causing chaos and mayhem. There are tons of these kinds of fics floating around in the fandom if you’re interested.

First, you need to download your story from AO3 as an EPUB file (as opposed to a PDF, which can have some ugly formatting issues). Next, go to your Amazon account online, and find the ‘Send to Kindle’ email address listed under your Kindle’s settings for that device. You can then attach the EPUB file to an email and send it off to that address – within a few minutes, it should show up on your Kindle. Just make sure you set the subject of the email to something like ‘Convert’ in order to get Amazon’s system to do its magic. I find this method to be very convenient for one-off instances where I am away from my computer and have only my phone with me. The only real caveat is that, if the author’s name on AO3 is just a username, Amazon won’t be able to change it to the author’s real name (should they choose to post under that name on Amazon, too). But otherwise, this method is pretty ideal for its ease of use.

The most powerful story in “Somebody Told Me” is about the last diner in a dying town. I sit at the counter and listen to a group of very regular people tell stories to each other about their lives, and somehow, the plate of eggs in front of me becomes a elegy to the passing of an era. He has a very darkly funny piece about the courthouse dog (yes, the dog comforts the crime victims), and I find his witty and compassionate take on the goings-on of very local people perfectly balanced. His portrait of a sharecropper’s daughter, her hands rough from her work in the fields but her voice full of hope for her dreams is heart-wrenching and hopeful. The way he can find the universal in these very hyper-local stories is his magic.

Everyone in these comments gets my taste way too well lol. I swear I could sit here and talk books with you guys all night.

It’s so much healthier for you than almost any social media platform out there. For one, there are no ads, ever. That in itself makes it a cleaner, less manipulative space. You’re not the product here. And as for the legal side of things, I don’t worry about it. Fanfiction has been around for decades, and there’s never been a case of a major studio suing a random fan for writing and posting their own stories for free. The legal advocacy arm of the not-for-profit AO3 is there to fight for this kind of space. They’re also incredibly transparent about the platform’s policies and how any disputes are handled. There’s even a system of tags that you can avoid anything that might be triggering to you. It’s a space that was built by a community and has a strong, healthy, ethical stance behind it. I’m more worried about the legality of downloading individual movies than I am about reading a piece of Star Wars fanfiction on AO3. For one, the platform was designed with your autonomy in mind, and that’s becoming an increasingly rare thing on the internet.
