The “Fjällbacka” series by Camilla Läckberg is another good example of a very Nordic type of story: small town secrets. The “Dark Iceland” series by Ragnar Jónasson is shorter but also very good and equally chilling. Be warned: once you have read one or the other, you will likely get hooked and soon be reading all sorts of mysteries.

More gritty and atmospheric crime novels? Yes, there’s plenty of Scandinavian noir to explore. Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series of novels is highly acclaimed – dark and twisty with complex characters – and is a good place to start with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Henning Mankell’s Wallander novels, while somewhat different in tone and tempo, also blend tension with real people.

There are plenty of other amazing crime novels outside of the Scandinavian genre too. The Dublin Murder Squad series by Tana French is another that explores the psychology of its characters and is equally as atmospheric. Then there’s the highly acclaimed Bosch series of crime novels by Michael Connelly – written from the perspective of a solitary detective working in Los Angeles. And if you’re after a strong female lead like Hole, Karin Slaughter’s Will Trent series is definitely worth a read too. Each series is a total obsession waiting to happen.

I was introduced to Jo Nesbø after devouring all of the Agatha Christie books, and they were a completely different read! But for fans of the deeply flawed Detective Hole, I highly recommend the French Commissaire Adamsberg series by Fred Vargas. But with quite a different atmosphere and style, Peter Robinson’s Inspector Banks novels are British crime with a lot of classic rock thrown in. Or if you’re interested in historical settings, the noir Bernie Gunther novels by Philip Kerr are fantastic. Every country seems to have their own brooding detective archetype.

It is widely known that Nesbø writes icy, suspenseful stories but few people realize that there are loads of other authors writing similarly styled books. At the moment I am devouring the ‘Inspector Erlendur’ series of Arnaldur Indriðason, set in Iceland with its harsh landscape and character driven police investigations. Then there is Jussi Adler-Olsen and his ‘Department Q’ series of rather grim investigations coupled with very quirky characters in the police station. And then there is Yrsa Sigurðardóttir’s wonderful standalone thrillers – they are so very paced in a very harsh manner. Each of these authors has their own take on ‘dark’.
