I'm stumped – I couldn't find Agnes Aubert or her mystical cat shelter in any mainstream novel. The name sounds like a pleasant new story idea for a cozy, supernatural tale of found family and protective spirits. The story idea itself could be a pleasant read, should you like such stories. For example, The Three Little Guardian Angels is a gentle, heartwarming tale that contains many sweet moments, as well as assistance provided by the three little angels to a single mother and her children who need help to get their lives back on track.

A wonderful cast of characters in ‘Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter’. Agnes Aubert herself is a very down-to-earth, practical and grieving person who runs the shelter with minute care for her rescued cats. Her landlord, Havelock Renard, is a mysterious and somewhat feared magician, and most of the tension between them is slowly revealed over the course of the book. Agnes’s sister, Élise Aubert, and her husband Gabriel are very solidly drawn as well as being part of Agnes’s social world. Her apprentice, Yannick Abrams, is a young, eager and very sweet guy. The evil twin of Havelock, Valérie Renard, is a very dynamic and charismatic antagonist to Agnes and the shelter. On the human Street-Level side, there’s Mina, a young woman with a very hard past, who is a volunteer at the shelter. And then there’s the detective investigating the shelter, Laurent Rouzet, who forces the humans to make some very tough choices between their love of cats and their loyalty to each other. And finally, there are the many cats in the book – His Majesty, for example, a wild and ferocious feline; and sweet little Banshee, a playful tabby cat with his own personality and even a few roles in the book as co-protagonist to Agnes. Overall, a very human book with many Vulnerable Humans, and some very unpredictable and quirky felines. Cozy but not sweet.

So here is a list of main humans and main cats and how they fit into the story: first the humans: Agnes Aubert (shelter manager); Havelock Renard (grumpy magician/landlord of shelter); Agnes’s sister Élise Aubert and her husband Gabriel; Yannick Abrams (apprentice of Havelock); Mina (volunteer with a past); Detective Laurent Rouzet ( occasional helper at the shelter); Valérie Renard (Havelock’s twin brother – very, very bad). And then there’s Agnes’s late husband Robin who figures in many of the memory passages between Agnes and her cats. And here are the main cats at the shelter: His Majesty (the totally untamable ginger cat); the persistently naughty tabby, Banshee; and Cataclysm and the others. These two families are at the heart of the story and much of its conflict and charm. I loved each of these human and feline characters in so many small ways.

I loved ‘Agnes Aubert's Mystical Cat Shelter’ not just because of the cats, but also because all of the human characters and the various shelter cats were fully rounded and messy and meaningful in their own ways. Agnes Aubert is a very organized and troubled woman who runs the shelter to the best of her ability and keeps the animals safe. Havelock Renard is a notorious magician who becomes Agnes’s landlord and reluctantly gets pulled into her life. Much of the conflict with Havelock stems from his complicated past with his twin sister Valérie Renard. There is also Yannick Abrams, the young apprentice of Havelock who slowly comes into his own throughout the story. Mina is a volunteer at the shelter who has a checkered past, but is somehow changed by her time at the shelter. There is also Detective Laurent Rouzet who gets involved with the shelter and tries to shut it down for various reasons. Agnes’s husband Robin is also portrayed and he is dearly loved and departed. The various cats in the story are His Majesty the feral, Banshee the resilient and hilarious and Cataclysm the cat with presence. It was wonderful to read about the practical, magical and emotional interactions between all of these various characters. The book is cozy and slightly melancholy which is my favorite type of reading.

I love how ‘Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter’ develops a very comforting cast of humans and animals. At the heart of it is Agnes Aubert, a very organized and devoted woman who runs the cat shelter and is searching for a new beginning after her husband’s death. In opposite to Agnes is the grumpy but also handsome magician Havelock Renard who is hiding the magical shop under the cat shelter from Agnes. Havelock’s past is marked by tragedy and is still hurtful to him today. Agnes’s younger sister Élise Aubert is very practical and wants to protect her sister from getting hurt. Her husband Gabriel is part of their family. The shelter is run by a team of volunteers. The supporting cast of humans consists of Havelock’s young apprentice Yannick Abrams who slowly develops the connection between the magical world and the human world, Mina, a young and streetwise girl who was in and out of foster homes but found a new family among the cats of the shelter, and Detective Laurent Rouzet who is investigating some mysterious happening but keeps getting confused. And then there is Robin, Agnes’s late husband. He is still very present in Agnes’s life. On the opposite side of Havelock is his charismatic but also dangerous twin sister Valérie Renard who is the main antagonist in the story. Just like in the real life shelter the cats are not just background animals but an integral part of the story. They are all very different but equally endearing. His Majesty, Banshee and Cataclysm are just a few examples of the many cats living in the shelter. If you like character-driven cozy fantasy than you will love the way Heather Fawcett developed her human and animal characters. They are all very unique, lovable and remind the reader of real people.

I think one of the greatest threats that the characters in this series have faced was the health inspection in Volume 2. Agnes had to keep the cats calm, Mochi had to hide the obvious use of magic, Leo had to provide the correct veterinary records for the many animals that lived in the house, and Mr. Henderson distracted the inspector. The threat to the house and the people who lived there was not an evil one, but rather an institutional one. It was a great example of a high-stakes situation for the characters in which they used their greatest asset (cleverness and teamwork) and their greatest resource (the magic of the cats) to saved the day. No battles, no villains, just a group of friends trying to protect their home from bureaucracy.

I am mixing up a light novel with a webcomic here, I think – the original has Agnes and Mochi as its two main characters, with Pippin, Soot, Duchess, and later a stray calico named Marbles (who can predict the weather as long as she’s napping) joining them in their magical feline forms. Of the human cast members, Leo the vet and old Mr. Henderson are the most developed, but as for how the others hang, there’s a webcomic that I have lying around here somewhere, with a variety of work at the shelter by a teenage Sam to contrast with the primary group. Agnes would like you to know that some fans have perceived his inclusion to sully the quiet, rather old-fashioned magical community they’re in the process of forming up to defend against, against the backdrop of a note-of-their-existence in a very ordinary world that is just starting to notice they’re odd. But I don’t get that reading at all – he’s really sweet.

I'm curious about the author’s process here. Was Agnes created first and then the other characters built out from her? Or did the author envision the entire group at once? The author has created a group of characters with very distinct skills and personalities. There’s the dreamer (Agnes), the realist (Mochi), the healer (Leo), the sage (Mr. Henderson), and the many specialists of the cats. The author has clearly designed a group of characters to run a very odd organization and to bring about the situations that will play out in the stories of the shelter. And yet, these are very real people. Perhaps the author has done the best character-based worldbuilding of all time.

Does anyone else read Leo and volunteer Elise as having romantic potential? I seem to recall in volume 4 Leo working with Elise on a project, and their interactions had these shy and playful moments. (I know, I know, there could be so many people that the author has written into this story and it would be hard to have a large amount of romantic tension in there already, and that would be fine too). Anyway, Leo and Elise could be cute in a slow burn sort of way. But I already like that this series focuses on platonic and familial love, and the romantic potential between two side characters would just be an extra thing. But it could be sweet.

The names in this story are so much fun to analyze. Agnes Aubert sounds so down to earth and nice. Then there is Mochi, the name of a serious cat that is so silly andcontrastive. Pippin is another playful name and he is described as being small. Soot is another very descriptive and poetic name for a cat. And then there is Duchess which implies elegance and grandure. And then there is Leo the vet, lion, king of beasts. Mr. Henderson is so wonderfully generic that it is perfect for the man who is hiding in plain sight. Even the occasional antagonist of the shelter, Mr. Greeley, has a pinched and very bureaucratic sounding name. The author obviously put a lot of care into choosing the names of the characters. Even before you read about them the names of the characters reinforce their roles in the story.

It’s nice that not all of the main characters are young. Agnes is an older, retired woman. Mr. Henderson is an elderly gentleman. The concerns of the story are related to maintaining a home, making do with limited resources, maintaining peace and learning. These are all very relevant to an older generation, often overlooked in fantasy. Even the conflicts are dealt with in a mature, wise and long term manner – all about compromise, good sense and looking after things in the best possible way. The one young character, Leo, is there to provide a link to the rest of the series which centers around the older and milder protagonists. It’s all rather quietly revolutionary.
