How Do Koikatsu Mods Impact Game Performance And Stability?

In Koikatsu, we often get to see new gameplay mechanics and ways to customize characters all made by the Koikatsu community. Many mods even can optimize texture and frame rates to better enhance gameplay, but there are also many ways mods can ruin a Koikatsu experience as well. A typical example of this would be a character download. At first glance, they may look amazing but when actually downloaded and put into the game, they can drastically decrease game speed and even cause many instances of crashes and freezing.

I mean the diversity of mods out there is pretty big, like some of them even just add outfits and poses for characters, which is pretty fun to play around with. Though in most cases combining multiple mods will cause huge problems in terms of the game’s compatibility, like it could cause a crash, freeze or even just not load at all. I mean, I’ve had a pack of pretty light mods that ran very well, but then the player with the much more complex set of mods would be like, “Oh man, this game is running so slowly, and it’s so unresponsive.”

It’s all about trial and error, so test each mod individually and see if it causes any problems. Sometimes a mod may cause a game to crash, and it’s worth looking on the game’s forums to see if anyone else has experienced the same problem. The modding community can be very vocal, so you can usually get a feel for whether a particular mod is good or not from other players’ experiences. Of course, there’s nothing quite like the feel of modding a game to really get under the skin of it, but the most important thing is to make sure that the game’s performance is maintained to the highest standard.

My perception is that mods fall into three classes of impact, and thus, of risk to stability. The first tier includes the core frameworks and critical bug fixes (BepInEx, IllusionFixes, etc.). These have a minimal impact to performance and offer extreme stability. You need these. The second tier includes a slew of quality-of-life mods and content that add new stuff to customize characters (more sliders, more clothing, more hair, etc.). Their impact to performance will vary based on quantity and quality, but generally are very stable when coming from quality sources. The third tier includes the ‘overhaul’ types: graphics overhauls, completely new gameplay systems, and massive asset rework packs. These have a very large impact to performance, and a large risk of instability. So, use these with extreme caution, one at a time, and be prepared to remove them should they cause problems. For most people, sticking to the first two tiers will provide the best balance of modded content and stability.

The performance hit doesn’t bother me but those occasional anomalies do. A character’s eyeballs might be floating three feet in front of their face or a texture might only appear correctly from one angle. These are the real costs of modding. Immersion breaking jank is what I call it. Stability crashes are kind of a pain but you can always reload. But the occasional visual glitch is a constant reminder that a game is a frail thing held together by a variety of digital duct tape and pipe dreams. I’ve learned to just laugh at them and include them in the odd silly screenshot. That’s just part of the fun of playing a deeply modded game. It’s not a polished product by any stretch of the imagination. Instead it’s a wonderfully collaborative, chaotic, creative space where anything can happen.
