Whether that's still 'War and Peace' is debatable, but it gets the job done for a book report.

'Don Quixote' sometimes gets this treatment too, focusing on the famous windmill tilting and Sancho Panza's proverbs while shortening some of the nested tales. I tried an abridged version as a kid and it felt like just the jokes, missing the melancholic, layered satire. Still, it's how a lot of people first meet the character, so it has its place.
