Honestly? Boredom. The most consistent conflict I see is the author fighting to keep things interesting after the main character becomes invincibly overpowered in chapter three. When your hero can solve any physical threat with a snap of his fingers, the only drama left is the romantic tug-of-war. So they'll introduce a harem member from a rival nation, or have a princess's engagement threaten the group's stability, or maybe reveal one of the girls has a dark secret that puts her at odds with the others. It's all just narrative glue to stick fight scenes between slices of domestic fluff and fan service. After a while, the conflicts stop feeling like organic problems and start feeling like items on a checklist the story has to hit before the next bath scene.

The classic setup usually pits the overpowered protagonist against some big evil—a demon lord, a corrupt kingdom, you know the drill. That's the external layer. But the real meat of the conflict, the stuff that keeps me coming back, is almost always internal to the harem itself. There's this constant, low-grade tension between the fantasy of having every girl adore you and the narrative need for some semblance of drama. So you get these weirdly manufactured jealousies where characters who are supposedly allies will snipe at each other over who gets to make the hero's lunch. It can feel pretty shallow if the characters aren't given their own goals outside of him.

What I find more interesting are the stories that use the isekai premise to question the harem structure itself. A rare few ask: what happens when a modern person is dropped into a situation where they're expected to collect romantic partners like trophies? The conflict becomes about their modern sensibilities clashing with the world's norms. Sadly, that's not the common route. More often, it's about managing the logistics of affection—keeping everyone happy, balancing screen time, and resolving misunderstandings before the big boss fight. The central conflict is less about 'will the hero win?' and more about 'how will he keep all these relationships from imploding?' which, honestly, is a different kind of battle entirely. My tolerance for it depends entirely on whether the female characters feel like people or just attributes attached to a love interest.
