What's funny is that I ended up making my own spreadsheet a while back because I couldn't find a single definitive list online that wasn't missing something. It's not just about the standalones under his name alone; you've got to account for all the co-authored stuff he markets as his, which is a whole separate rabbit hole.

Sites like his official one or Wikipedia have the major titles, but they often group series and standalones together without clear distinction. I'd start with those, then cross-reference with a big retailer like Amazon, sorting by publication date, to catch the more obscure ones. Just be prepared for some discrepancies, because a book listed as standalone one place might be considered part of a loose 'series' somewhere else based on a returning side character.

I gave up on this quest. I just pick up whatever Patterson book has an interesting cover at the airport. They're all basically the same: short chapters, someone in danger, a twist at the end. Does the order really matter that much if you're not following a character's arc?

But if you're set on it, maybe look for a Patterson fan forum. Those deep-cut fans might have a meticulously maintained Google Doc or spreadsheet they'd be willing to share. That's going to be more current and detailed than any commercial website, which only cares about promoting the latest bestseller.

This is the kind of question that makes me wish there was a 'Patterson-verse' wiki as detailed as the ones for fantasy series. A place where every book, every character crossover, every timeline detail is logged. But his books aren't really that kind of interconnected, so the fan motivation to build that isn't there.

Until that exists, we're all just making our own lists. I use the notes app on my phone. Every time I see a Patterson standalone I haven't logged, I add it. It's incomplete, but it's my incomplete list, and that's good enough for my reading goals.

Wait, are we counting the BookShots? Those are like novella-length standalones. And what about the nonfiction, like 'The Murder of King Tut'? See, this is why it's messy.

For a clean, fiction-only list of full-length novels, I'd point you to the filtering on Goodreads. Go to his author page, click 'More Books,' and then use the search within feature to filter out the big series names ('Cross,' 'Murder Club,' etc.). What's left will be mostly standalones and co-authored projects. You can sort that list by original publication date to get your order.

What is the correct reading order for James Patterson standalones?

You've got me stumped on this one—James Patterson's output is a tidal wave at this point. Aren't most of his books technically standalones outside the big series like Alex Cross? I'd just grab whatever's on the library shelf and dive in, no order needed. That's half the fun with an author like him. Honestly, I'm not the person to ask for a definitive list. I'm more of a 'see a cool cover, read the book' type when it comes to thrillers.
