The series loses a bit of steam after the first dozen books, in my opinion. The later ones feel a bit repetitive, rehashing the same family dynamics with new names. The early to mid-series books are the strongest, where the historical changes are most vividly felt. So if you're a completionist, go for the full order. But if you're a casual reader looking for the best of the series, I'd recommend books 1 through 8 or 9, then maybe sampling the Bow Street books if you want a change of pace.

For digital readers, be warned: the ebook metadata is often wrong. A book listed as 'Adams Family #1' might actually be #5. Always cross-reference the title with a reliable list. I've been burned before, starting a book only to realize I've missed a key marriage or death because I was reading out of sequence due to a retailer's error. It's a common problem with older series that have been re-issued digitally.

I found the first book in a holiday cottage years ago and devoured it. I spent the rest of the holiday tracking down the second and third in local shops. It became a fun treasure hunt. Maybe that's the best way to do it—let serendipity guide you. Find them in charity shops, second-hand bookstores, library sales. The casual, stumbled-upon nature of my discovery made it feel more special than just downloading a list in order.

I'm realizing I have a strong emotional attachment to this series I've never really articulated. My own family is scattered, and revisiting the Adams clan feels like a reunion with constants. They never fundamentally change; they just age and adapt. In a world of constant flux, that's incredibly comforting. So my advice on order is whatever causes you the least stress. The goal is to reach that feeling of comfort, not to pass a test.

I'm waiting for someone to create a definitive online guide with a flowchart. Until then, we're all just sharing our best guesses and experiences. The Wikipedia page for Mary Jane Staples has a basic bibliography, but it doesn't attempt to merge the series. Goodreads lists are user-generated and can be wrong. It's the wild west of series ordering! We need a hero with too much time on their hands to create the ultimate fan resource.

Book 1 Saints and Sinners
She was the light to my dark.
The saint to my sinner. with her innocent eyes and devilish curves.
A Madonna that was meant to be admired but never touched.
Until someone took that innocence from her.
She left.
The darkness in my heart was finally complete.
I avenged her, I killed for her, but she never came back.
Until I saw her again. An angel dancing around a pole for money.
She didn’t know I owned that club. She didn’t know I was watching.
This time I won’t let her escape.
I will make her back into the girl I knew.
Whether she likes it or not.
Book 2 Judge and Jury
I can’t stop watching her.
I’m not even sure I want to.
Taylor Lawson, blonde, beautiful, and totally oblivious to how much dangers she’s in.
She’s also the one juror in my upcoming murder trial that hasn’t been bought.
The one who can put me behind bars for a very long time.
I know I should execute her.
After all that’s what I do.
I am the Judge.
I eliminate threats to The Family.
And Taylor is a threat.
But I don’t want to kill her.
Possessing her, making her love me seems like a much better plan for this particular Juror.

The last thing Sara Flannigan needs is a man in her life. When she returns to her hometown, she vows to create a happy life for her son and to rebuild her life after a painful divorce. Yet when she meets her son’s new doctor, she can’t deny the spark of attraction that heats between them.
The problem?
He’s Harrison Thornton, the oldest son of the illustrious Thornton family. His family would never accept a woman like Sara, a woman who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. She tries to ignore the whispers of her past, but she soon realizes secrets can never stay hidden for long.
Especially from the man claiming her wounded heart.
Growing up in the rich and powerful Thornton family, Harrison has lived a charmed life. A renowned physician, the last thing he expects is to desire the mother of one of his patients. Sara is beautiful and intelligent, and she’s completely devoted to her son, something that only deepens his attraction to her.
He doesn't want a single night of passion, though: he wants forever. Yet there are forces at work and people determined to tear them apart. Even Sara turns from him, certain she's unworthy. Harrison refuses to let Sara slip away, and soon, he’s fighting the greatest battle of all.
The battle to win the heart of the woman he loves."
I tried chronological order once and regretted it. The prequels are wonderful, but they're written with a fan's affection.
They expect you to already care about Sammy and Susie from hearing about them in the Sally books. Reading 'Down Lambeth Way' first felt like reading an inside joke where I wasn't in on the punchline. The narrative voice has a winking quality, as if it's saying, 'Remember these folks?' When I switched to publication order on a re-read, everything clicked. The prequels felt like a rewarding gift after getting to know the family.
My advice is to earn that backstory by following the original journey.
I dipped into the middle once and was totally lost with all the nicknames and family in-jokes. Went back to the start and it made SO much more sense. The timeline connections in the early books establish the family culture. That culture is the glue for everything that comes later. Skipping the foundation means missing the essence.
The delineation is fan-made for convenience, not author-intended. Look at any online reading order list. They often number the books 1-30+ in one sequence. However, in the descriptions or comments, you'll see people say, 'Books 1-8 are the classic Adams era,' or 'The Harrison storyline really gets going around book 12.' This is readers identifying natural narrative arcs within the larger saga. The publisher never marketed them as separate entities. It's all 'The Adams Family Saga' on the cover, because ultimately, every character's roots trace back to that house in Walworth.
Wait, I'm not sure. Can someone who's actually read them all confirm? I've only read a couple my aunt gave me, and they weren't labeled as book one or two. I don't want to give bad info. The covers just had the family name and a cute illustration.
The next in line is 'Maggie.' What strikes me is how the author manages to make each book feel both standalone in its focus and yet completely interconnected. Reading 'Maggie' right after the first book enriches the experience of both.
