What Is The Correct Maze Runner Series Order To Read?

Can't remember if it's recommended to read the prequel 'The Kill Order' before the main trilogy or after finishing it, for a spoiler-free experience.

I tried chronological order once for a re-read, and it was a completely different vibe. Knowing the full horror of the Flare from 'The Kill Order' and the sinister origins from 'The Fever Code' before Thomas even wakes up in the Box casts this incredibly dark shadow over everything. Every interaction in the Glade feels more sinister. You understand Gally's paranoia on a deeper level. It's not the intended first-time experience, but for a revisit, it's phenomenal. It highlights the themes of sacrifice and utilitarian ethics in a much starker way. The trilogy becomes less of a 'what is happening?' puzzle and more of a 'how did we get here?' lament. Highly recommend that order for a second journey through.

My copy of 'The Death Cure' has a preview chapter of 'The Kill Order' at the back. That's a pretty strong hint from the publisher about the intended reading order! They wouldn't tease the prequel after the trilogy's conclusion if they meant for you to read it first. That's a tangible, physical clue in the books themselves. So if you have physical copies, check the last pages of 'The Death Cure'. You'll likely find a sample of the next book to be published, which was 'The Kill Order'. Case closed, in my opinion.

The ethical questions in 'The Fever Code' hit so much harder after you've seen the results of WICKED's work. Reading it first, WICKED are just faceless villains. Reading it after the trilogy, you understand the terrible cost of their 'for the greater good' philosophy. You've met the kids they're experimenting on. That moral complexity is the best part of the prequel, and it's completely lost if you don't have the trilogy's context. So for thematic depth, publication order is non-negotiable. You need the emotional investment from the trilogy to make the prequel's dilemmas resonate.

Wait, are we including the graphic novels? There's 'The Maze Runner Files' which is more of an in-universe artifact collection, and the graphic novel adaptation of the first book. Those are supplementary. For the prose novels, the five are it. The graphic novel is a fun adaptation but doesn't add new story. 'The Maze Runner Files' is pure extra lore—blueprints, memos, that kind of thing. It's for the hardcore fans who want to examine every memo from WICKED. It would naturally be read last, after all the novels, as a deep-dive reference. So for 99% of readers, the correct order is just the five main books, with the trilogy first.

My kid asked me this same question. I told them to read the three books with the cool titles about running and trials and a cure. The other two books have 'Order' and 'Code' in the titles, which sounds like homework. They got the hint.

Isn't part of the fun discovering the order for yourself? Like, look at the publication dates. It's not hidden information. A quick search tells you which book came out first. That's your starting point. We over-complicate things with 'chronological vs. publication' debates.

The 'Maze Runner' series is such an exhilarating ride! To really soak up the world James Dashner created, it's best to follow the intended reading order. Start off with 'The Maze Runner' – that's where everything kicks off. It sets the stage beautifully, introducing Thomas and the Gladers, grappling with their escape attempts from the maze. Then, jump right into 'The Scorch Trials,' where things get even more intense and the stakes skyrocket. You get to explore the post-apocalyptic landscape, which is filled with new challenges and intriguing characters. After that, you should read 'The Death Cure.' This one really hits hard as we see the conclusion of Thomas's journey and the unraveling of WICKED's plans. It’s quite an emotional ride, so grab some tissues! Following the main trilogy, there's 'The Kill Order' and then 'The Fever Code' that serve as prequels to fill in the backstory and give context to WICKED and the sun flares. So, to sum it up: 'The Maze Runner,' 'The Scorch Trials,' 'The Death Cure,' then dive into the prequels with 'The Kill Order' and 'The Fever Code.' Enjoy the wild adventure! Each book expands on the lore and deepens our understanding of the characters, which is something I genuinely appreciate as a fan of immersive narratives. Whether you're new to reading or a seasoned book lover, the pacing and tension in ‘The Maze Runner’ series are sure to captivate you!

The 'Maze Runner' series by James Dashner is one of my all-time favorites, and I’ve read it multiple times. The correct order starts with 'The Maze Runner,' which introduces us to Thomas and the Gladers trapped in the maze. Next is 'The Scorch Trials,' where the group faces a harsh desert landscape and new challenges. The third book, 'The Death Cure,' wraps up the main trilogy with intense action and emotional moments. After that, there’s 'The Kill Order,' a prequel that dives into the origins of the Flare virus. Finally, 'The Fever Code' is another prequel that explores the creation of the maze and the early days of Thomas and Teresa. Reading them in this order gives you the full experience of the story’s timeline and character development.

Don’t forget about the short story 'Crank Palace'! It focuses on Newt during the events of 'The Death Cure'. Chronologically, it happens alongside that final book. It’s a heartbreaker, but a must-read for Newt fans. So the full chronological list including everything is: 'The Kill Order', 'The Fever Code', 'The Maze Runner', 'The Scorch Trials', 'Crank Palace' (timeline overlaps with the next one), 'The Death Cure'. The 'Maze Runner Files' is supplemental material you can check out anytime after the first book.

How should I read the Maze Runner series in timeline order?

You've got a few options depending on whether you're all about internal chronology or publication order. The main trilogy ('The Maze Runner', 'The Scorch Trials', 'The Death Cure') is the core experience. Following that with the prequel 'The Kill Order' and then 'The Fever Code' technically gives you the timeline of the world, but it spoils huge mysteries from the original books. Starting with the prequels first is like reading a spoiler-filled history textbook before the actual adventure. Most fans would tell you to read them after you're already invested in Thomas and the Gladers, maybe even as a revisit. Publication order keeps the suspense intact and lets you discover the world alongside the characters, which is the whole point. Save the 'Crank Palace' novella for after 'The Death Cure' as well, since it deals with a specific character's fate post-trilogy.
