The romantic structure of the movie is a straight line with occasional wobbles due to internal turmoil rather than a triangle. The wobbles consist of moments of doubt, miscommunication, and even social anxiety but overall they are headed in the right direction – towards each other. There is no alternative destination that receives any narrative weight. The other characters exist in the periphery of our couple and at times interfere with the line by commenting or making things happen but their own gravitational pull is not strong enough to pull the couple in a completely different direction. Instead the story follows the line as it becomes a straighter, stronger, and more defined line as time passes. It is a simple yet elegant structure that is very satisfying to follow because there is never any unexpected turn to the story that will pull the couple in a completely opposite direction. You can follow along peacefully and confidently knowing that each scene will bring the couple closer together.

It would be great to get some insight into the relationship between the protagonist’s daughter and the administrator. It sounds like their relationship is somewhat akin to that of a researcher and a fascinating yet deadly anomaly. There’s a healthy dose of fear and respect, interspersed with an edgy line of awe inspired scientific curiosity, and a very suspiciously intimate nature, born from long periods of close study and attempt to contain. No, it wouldn’t be romantic by any stretch. Rather she watches him, and he continually defies her. An interesting, even strange, cosmic-scale game of cat and mouse that they play. And it seems they’re mutually dependent as well.

I think anime often depicts friendships in kind of a positive, no-boundaries way and that is really great to see too. Haikyuu!! is an excellent example of that kind of relationship in the way that Hinata and Kageyama’s initial rivalry has grown into an extreme partnership that is absolutely thrilling to watch. And sometimes the anime will probe into the possibility that friendships can become frayed, as in the case of Steins;Gate where Okabe’s friendships are severely tested by the effects of time travel. Either way, it is wonderful storytelling and shows the complexities of human relationships so very well.

This book is intensely sexy compared to the typical fantasy novels such as Mistborn or The Name of the Wind, moderately sexy compared to adult romance novels found in regular bookstore’s adult sections, and mild compared to most fan fiction (note: context, context). Within the genre of New Adult/Adult Romantasy this book is quite steamy. Its sexiness is integral to both the relationships between the characters and the magic in the world. Most books with this much sex use it as an afterthought, but not this book. This book’s sexiness is essential to the story.

This is another beloved character that we love to watch in films. He is typically a bit gruff and perhaps not part of the main family but in the end he is so lovable that he ends up being the greatest father figure to this other person outside of his own family. We can recall the classic ‘Big Daddy’ starring Adam Sandler as Sonny, an eccentric and quirky man who after a night out drinking wakes up the next morning to find a baby in his care. Despite it all he goes on to care for the baby until the real father turns up. This film packs a lot of laughs throughout but it is a beautifully warming movie at the end of the day too. The ‘fun uncle’ or ‘best friend dad’ is once again another great example of why the ‘unconventional dad’ is so popular with audiences today. The biggest symbol of love and learning for how to be a parent is found in the movie “Mrs. Doubtfire”. In the movie Robin Williams plays the part of Daniel, a male spouse who wants to spend more time with his children after a divorce, so he dresses up as a female nanny named Mrs. Doubtfire. Most of the movie he is in ‘nanny’ mode, playing the part of a fun, loving, young, and loose ‘uncle’ to the children, but eventually the mask comes off and he exposes himself as their real dad. The movie not only shows him learning to be a father to his children but also a better husband to his wife. Taking a different turn, ‘The Game Plan’ is an action-packed film where a football player (Dwayne Johnson) finds his life turned upside down when he discovers he has a daughter he never knew existed. Fumbling his way through parenting and accidentally finding humor in moments meant for tears, he attempts to learn how to be a good dad. Scenes of him awkwardly attempting to braid his daughter’s hair and sitting at a tea party with her were sweet. Recent films are bringing another twist to this gruff but lovable father figure: even when he makes mistakes, simply showing up for his children is enough. This is particularly evident in the recent true story of Instant Family, in which Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne adopt three children including a hardened teenager. Watching the father figure struggle to connect with the teenager, often getting things wrong but realising she needs a friend as much as a parent, is a very real and powerful take on this.

'Tender Wings of Desire' was originally intended to be a trilogy but the book was selling so poorly that the publisher put the kibosh on any further sequels. As it is, the book is supposed to be complete but there are several dangling storylines, most notably the mysterious fate of the vampire’s sire. And then there’s the ending. The transformation of the human protagonist to a vampire is executed in what can only be described as hasty fashion in order to give the book a sense of closure as it stands currently. Fan wikis for the novel (including the author’s emails from several years ago) back up my claims about Tender Wings. Although it has recently been marketed as a standalone novel, there is certainly a lot of festering potential for more. The novel would greatly benefit from a reader of the properly planned out Eternal Nocturne five book series. The gradual escalation found in that series is exactly what the novel needs.

Short story anthologies feature very short stories, and are usually published as ebook anthologies, on platforms like Kobo, Nook by Barnes & Noble, Apple iBooks and many more. You can search for the title of your story plus the word ‘anthology’ or ‘collection’.

For me, the dual protagonists were Elara and Kaelen. The way their initial enemies turned into enemies-turned-allies, and possibly even more than that, was at the heart of the story. Elara is a book-smart, naive dreamer who has no idea how to cope in the brutal politics of the dream world, while Kaelen is a cynical harden veteran, full of survivor’s guilt. It was really wonderful to see Elara slowly soften Kaelen up, and to see Kaelen slowly temper Elara’s ideals and help her to see reality. The dialogue between them was all wonderful, really – very, very sharp, with lots of subtext, and I could really see their relationship grow by brick, slowly but painfully. The rest of the cast of characters played around the edges of the two, and really, the story lived and died on the readership of these two characters. I fully believed in them both.

My take on this is to consider the plot mechanics. The twist that the best friend’s father is a pre-existing, deeply emotional relationship which gets instantly torn apart from the best friend is so much more powerful than two complete strangers in a marriage of convenience. And because this is released chapter by chapter on the app, that tension can simmer away for days/weeks/months and then get a wonderful resolution. You read the end of a chapter with the best friend crying in it, and then you get to sit with that for a day or so. The fact that you’re reading it on an app that doesn’t allow binging of chapters is, I think, a key part of the experience: the story is being delivered as intended: with forced pauses for emotional absorption. It’s a feature not a bug.

I’m also having trouble locating a PDF copy of When She Tempts for my Kindle. While the book is available at some online retailers, I have not found it listed at major retailers, and the few links to PDF copies that I have found will download a possible virus to my computer. I hope the author will consider making this book available for download at a later time. Until then, I will have to wait and hope that the book is worth reading. I devoured the author’s sample chapters and enjoyed the tension that was written into them – it was like a chef’s kiss of excellent writing.
