'Tender Wings of Desire' was originally intended to be a trilogy but the book was selling so poorly that the publisher put the kibosh on any further sequels. As it is, the book is supposed to be complete but there are several dangling storylines, most notably the mysterious fate of the vampire’s sire. And then there’s the ending. The transformation of the human protagonist to a vampire is executed in what can only be described as hasty fashion in order to give the book a sense of closure as it stands currently.

Fan wikis for the novel (including the author’s emails from several years ago) back up my claims about Tender Wings. Although it has recently been marketed as a standalone novel, there is certainly a lot of festering potential for more. The novel would greatly benefit from a reader of the properly planned out Eternal Nocturne five book series. The gradual escalation found in that series is exactly what the novel needs.

As far as I have found, there is no continuation of ‘Tender Wings of Desire’. Written as a single story to maintain the sombre tone of the novel, it does read very much as a stand-alone. The hints of a greater world, such as the mention of other vampire courts, are not explored further. The only other stand-alone in a similar vein of Gothic, romantic horror is ‘Crimson Covenant’ which has far more politics between the various immortal factions.

'Love's Tender Wings of Desire' is another prime example of how a stand-alone vampire novel can be extremely interesting in itself, avoiding series- stereotyping completely. The fully developed human turned into a vampire within the confines of a novel develops fully and by the epilogue, hundreds of years have passed and he is still with his love, forever and ever.

There is some potential for spin-off stories (such as the war between the Eastern and Western clans of vampires which is mentioned briefly in the story) but that is really just there to add some flavor to the main plot. According to the author's afterword, she likes to write stand-alone stories with rich and complete world-building. While 'Tender Wings of Desire' is a stand-alone, 'Nocturne of the Damned' is a similar styled story, told in a three volume, interconnected series of books, that follows the history of several different vampire bloodlines over generations.

The focus of the story and the mental unraveling of Lira is what makes it so intense and it would have been easy to take the focus off her and start to follow other POVS or even explore a wider conspiracy to make a series of this. One of my biggest pet peeves with books is when they are marketed as standalone novels but are actually sequels. Thankfully, The accompany to End of Day is clearly and honestly the second part of a story and not a attempt to pass off another part of a larger series to readers. The cover, copyright page, and author’s notes all refer to this being the end of a two-book duology. I can see where confusion would arise with readers picking up this book expecting it to be a standalone novel and not realizing until later that it is actually the second part of a series. However, the material itself does not try to hide the fact that it is part of a series. It is respectful to the reader, assuming that they either know this already or will realize it quickly through the narrative’s depth.

This is a quiet, reflective ending to a story. It doesn’t end on a cliffhanger; rather, the main action of the story has been resolved and the story now explores the after effects of what has happened in terms of grief and hope for the future to rebuild. It’s a conclusion. I’ve tried to write a standalone novel and if the last page gives a sense of finality then that’s what I’ve achieved. A series opener would have ended with a new threat or a great mystery. Instead this ends with acceptance. And that in itself is a big tonal statement about it being a standalone novel greater than any author statement.

It’s a 3 book series, so it’s a great place to start reading the author. There’s lots of romance and supernatural action throughout the books, but the story really takes off as the series progresses and the main character gets more involved in the supernatural world. There’s even a big territorial battle and some mystic prophecies in the 2nd and 3rd books. I especially loved how Winters wrote the werewolf lore in this series. Her take on the ‘mating bond’ was fantastic, with lots of consent and agency on the part of the main character. The series is wrapped up nicely by the end of Book 3, but there are a few open threads that could be pursued in spin-offs.

It’s really frustrating to not have any information on this. With a series as popular as Wings of Fire, it would be great for the studio to release concept art, teasers for the voice cast, etc. to tide fans over until production wraps. Instead, the lack of silence has led to much anxiety and much rumor-spreading on various forums (some speculated that it had been canceled, while others thought they were making huge changes to the book and its characters). It would be easy to release a simple message to fans that they’re “still working on it” and to “stay tuned” – in fact, it’s such easy engagement that other studios release tiny bits of info to their fans. Maybe the Wings of Fire team is just extremely secretive, but it’s an odd way to behave in this day and age of instant updates. Hopefully, they’re just deeply immersed in production right now.

There isn't a specific number of books in this series, but Amara and Silas's story is a standalone within the author's larger collection, 'City of Whispers'. Each book in the 'City of Whispers' collection features a new leading man and woman, but all the novels are set in a lavish, cutthroat world and sometimes even take place in part at the same locations, including the famous Skyline Bar. Thus, you may catch a few references to Amara and Silas in other 'City of Whispers' novels, but for the most part they are a complete and self-contained story - better than a strict series, but not entirely standalone.

Yes, I get more excited for book releases than for a hypothetical movie (although I really do hope they do make one, it would be really cool to see how they interpret some of the scenes). At least new book releases are real and tangible and they are by the amazing author Tui T. Sutherland who hasn’t failed us yet! A movie would be a collaboration with hundreds of people so there’s bound to be someone who messes it up. But a book is a direct line of author to reader. So, for now, my focus will be on the books that are already on my shelf. The main event for me is there.

I initially confused this book as being part of a larger series due to it being the ‘perfect entry point’ into said series. In essence, the book is so well-written that it teaches the reader how the larger Cosmere works as they’re reading it. Often, Hoid’s narration will serve to explain concepts such as the Cognitive Realm in a fairly-tale-esque manner which is both perfectly in-character and adequate for introducing new readers to the topic. In actuality, Warren’s fantastic work on Mistborn: Secrets of the SINISTER has created a fantastic story which serves as a grand introduction to the larger Cosmere for new fans whilst also acting as part of the larger series, pretending to be a standalone pirate fantasy adventure. This is very clever series architecture.
