This discussion is great. Makes me want to go re-read 'The Stars My Destination' and see how it holds up against all these points. Gully Foyle is the ultimate revenge protagonist, change my mind.
Is it weird that the most satisfying revenge endings for me are the ones that don't happen? Where the protagonist is standing there, weapon in hand, ready to deliver the final blow... and they choose not to. Not out of forgiveness, but out of a realization that completing the act would irrevocably chain them to the person who hurt them. They walk away, leaving the villain alive but utterly defeated in some other way—stripped of power, ignored, or forced to live with their own shame. The satisfaction comes from the protagonist's liberation, not the villain's pain. That choice represents a harder, stronger victory over their own darkness. It subverts the genre in a way that always hits me harder.
Ugh, revenge endings are so tricky! The satisfaction totally depends on whether the story earns it. If the protagonist just mercilessly butchers the antagonist in a two-page finale after 500 pages of suffering, it often feels cheap and hollow. The best ones, for me, make you question whether the revenge was even worth the soul the main character had to sell to get it. 'The Count of Monte Cristo' nails this—Edmond gets his vengeance, but the emotional cost is immense, and he’s left in a kind of beautiful, melancholy freedom. That bittersweet complexity is way more satisfying than a simple 'yay, the bad guy's dead.' It sticks with you because it feels true to the moral ambiguity of the whole endeavor.
A purely cathartic victory can work in a pulpy, action-driven story, but in anything aiming for depth, the ending needs to reflect the damage.
What about the supporting cast? A revenge story often involves allies or loved ones. A satisfying ending considers their fates, too. Does the protagonist's quest get them all killed or corrupted? Or do they manage to protect a few, providing a sliver of hope amidst the ruin? An ending where the hero saves their last remaining friend or family member during their revenge plot adds a layer of redemption to the darkness. It shows that not everything good in them was consumed. That small victory alongside the larger, grimier one can balance the emotional scales and provide a more complex, satisfying resolution than pure bleakness.

Betrayed by the one person she trusted the most, Keerah vowed to take revenge but would she still go on with her plans if she finds her self entangled with the love of her life who she can't keep if she were to choose revenge.
what would it be, love? or revenge?
Every woman's wedding day was always the happiest day of her life, but not in my case. On my wedding day, my white dress was stained with blood and a dripping bloody knife on my right hand.
And on the floor was my groom covered in a pool of his own blood. I was accused of murdering the man I spent four years loving.
The world turned their backs against me in my time of need and I was sentenced to thirty years in prison for a crime that I didn't commit. One year passed by after Simon's murder and I've learnt to adapt to my new life confined to those strong iron bars.
Until..
A knight in shining armour appeared out of the blue to bail me out, which was almost impossible but he did.
And soon, I figured out that the man I had mourned for and also accused and sentenced for his murder was living his best life in another country with my best friend and their new born baby.
A betrayal like that hurts but a blood thirty revenge was all I craved for.
What about revenge for something that wasn't directly personal? Like avenging a historical wrong against their ancestors or a community atrocity they learned about. That broader, more ideological motivation can create a fascinating and morally complex protagonist.
The ‘performance to reality’ arc. Characters who are always ‘on’—the life of the party, the perfect host—meet someone who sees their exhaustion. The arc is about letting the performance drop and being loved in their quiet, tired, ordinary state. The comedy comes from the contrast between their public persona and their private, deflated self. The ending is a quiet scene where they can just be, without entertaining, and feel completely accepted.
Pacing is everything. You can't have brutal scene after brutal scene. The narrative needs valleys to make the peaks stand out. Those valleys are for character reflection, for building the world, for showing the mundane life the protagonist can never return to. The emotional catharsis is built in those quiet moments of longing, not just in the climax. When the final confrontation arrives, it's charged with all that accumulated sadness and missed potential. The violence, however graphic, becomes an expression of that profound loss. A story that rushes from trauma to revenge without those breathing spaces might deliver a jolt, but not a lasting cathartic release.
