I’ve been able to find to stream some of the GL anime with Indonesian subtitles on Bilibili, a Chinese anime streaming website that occasionally licenses some of the yuri titles and provides regional subtitles for them. But half the fun is discovering some hidden gems through the various fan communities for the different titles.

When I used to watch GL anime a lot, I used to search for streams and download them from old sites. Kiryuu and Nekonime have indo subs for most of the anime out there, but the quality can vary a lot. On the other hand, yuri themed discord servers are a gold mine. They trade recommendations and links to watch the anime, kind of like you would trade cards.

Look for a Japanese title + sub Indo search on Google, since often obscure blogs or forums will have the occasional link to a fansub up on a site like Mega.nz. Remember, these are done by fans in their free time, so be patient. The search is worth it for that one show you really want to watch though.

For GL anime with Indonesian subtitles, I use Anichin or Samehadaku (not perfect but recently updated). The anime community on Twitter is quite resourceful too, so I follow #AnimeIndo and #YuriSubIndo. For titles that have been archivied by Anime Batch, it’s okay too (though beware of lots of pop-up ads).

Sometimes the simplest answer is the best. As many others have said before me, the Prime Video option works. I had gone through all of the ‘watch online free’ sites 6 months ago that promised Indonesian subs and in the end every single one of them was a dead end, a redirect to yet another link or they had the subs out of sync. After an hour of frustration I ended up signing up for the Prime free trial and within 2 minutes I was watching the show with perfect Indonesian subs. I was able to find some unofficial fan translations for ‘Flowers are bait!’ on the site Bato.to and NovelUpdates, but I was only able to find the official release in Indonesian print. Another web novel with unexpected relationships and which is 100% free to read online in English is ‘Substitute Bride: The Mysterious Billionaire Falls For Me’. It’s a really fun novel and the relationships in it are really sweet and protective and not forced at all for dramatic purposes. The novel follows the main character as her arranged marriage kicks off and she finds love.

Man, searching for scanlations in specific languages is such a hassle. I was trying to find Portuguese translations of this webtoon and it was like searching for a code. For Indonesian I found this on Pinterest where people made boards with direct links to the entire chapter. It’s kinda messy since you have to click on each pin to read it but it’s ad-free. Sometimes people also host the image sets on their Tumblr blogs but that’s getting less common since a lot of sites get nuked. The way people provide us with access to scanlations in these social media sites is kinda rough but it exists. It’s like a black market for comics.

A previous thread seems to have forgotten the huge amount of time to invest into most of the VN’s out there. ‘Muv-Luv Alternative’ already reads like ‘War and Peace’ in novel length, and ‘The Fruit of Grisaia’ already is a trilogy of huge games. That’s why I prefer to read kinetic novels without any choice in the first place, or even shorter VNs of very good quality instead of getting stuck in huge games that would take a casual player weeks to even months to complete. Many visual novels are novels. ‘Muv-Luv Alternative’ is like reading ‘War and Peace’ twice. Even ‘The Fruit of Grisaia’ trilogy consists of three very long games. So, unless you are a very dedicated reader, you have to prepare for a very long time to read all the visual novels you want to. That’s why I prefer kinetic novels (no choices) or shorter novels (even if they are not as good). For example, ‘Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet’ (a 5-hour long kinetic novel that is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a museum robot recounts the events leading up to the apocalypse) and ‘Emily is Away’ (a nostalgic simulation of early 2000s chat clients, with a powerful and concise story) are much better examples of the medium than the typical harem-style game with 100 hours of gameplay. So, if you are new to the medium, I would recommend starting with a shorter, highly-rated game, as your ‘top’ game might be the one you actually finish.

I read this on Manta some time ago. All of it. As a single, long piece. It was a sweet, slow-burner of an office romance. I have no idea if it’s still on the front page of the site, but you can search for the exact title of the work and hopefully it will come up in the search results – Manta’s categorization of their hosted work can be a bit off. Fingers crossed that it’s not been pulled from the site and you can still read it all. Manta’s model for hosting work is a subscription-based one, so for me reading the whole thing as I did was a fairly reasonable thing to do. But without that, you’re stuck with a bunch of fan sites with terrible scans of the work, which does it a great disservice. The art is half the story and it’s been beautifully told. I really hope this finds a ‘home’ of its own soon.

This is very similar to my earlier mention of Gaisee and, in fact, I had also been ‘tubing’ a whole bunch of free Asian dramas – including some wonderful BL titles. The app offers totally free movies and TV series with limited titles. However, I thought it was worth a mention since the content was great and I loved discovering some of the lesser known titles through this app. You can’t go wrong since it’s free to download and watch, after all. While it’s true that there are ad breaks in between the drama, that’s the perfect time for grabbing more snacks as you continue to binge-watch. Yeah, the ads can be a bit annoying at times but that’s just about the time when you would be feeling all disturbed and need a few minutes to calm down and regroup after an intense and emotional drama, am I right? Anyhow, the apps for free BL dramas are definitely blossoming so go and see what other great stuff they have to offer!
