Often an adaptation of the alpha/beta/omega hierarchy, although sometimes reversed, it is very much applicable to female relationships too. The Alphas are generally depicted as being very strong, either physically and/or emitting certain pheromones that call to the Omegas, while the Omegas are often characterized by a natural cyclical occurrence known as ‘heats’ where they are compelled to find and mate with an Alpha. The Betas, as always, are just your run-of-the-mill women and are not affected by the supernatural changes that occur with the other two subs. Often in such stories, you find the women reverse typical roles and subvert certain tropes. For example, an omega saving the life of an alpha, or going against their society’s given roles. Examples of such novels would be Pulse and Prey and Under the Full Moon, both offering contrasting views of Omegaverse GL.

I find this tag fascinating to read about from a world building standpoint. So a lot of the same questions that authors would use to develop out a world for a straight story, you have to answer a little bit differently for a GL story, but then also how same sex relationships would work in that world as well. So some stories are total utopias where gender and designation don't matter at all and others are total dystopias where Omega women are literally bred as livestock. So really "how it works" is up to the author and can vary greatly from story to story.

This makes for a very versatile tag, as an example two Omegaverse GL fics could be total opposites of each other and be very enjoyable reading 2 of them side by side. There's a sweet coffee shop AU where the Alpha barista always remembers an Omega customer's order because her scent helps him to relax, and then there's a brutal military sci-fi where an Alpha commander has to protect her Omega unit member during a planetary invasion. This tag needs to be navigated with tag filtering aggressively on sites like AO3 in order to read plenty of the sub-tropes that you enjoy and avoid the ones that you don't.
