Seeing so many web novels I adore on Wattpad, having a portable PDF copy to keep offline would be perfect for commutes. Is there a safe converter tool that fans recommend?

I know some of you want to download Wattpad stories as PDFs. I use a browser extension called 'Wattpad Reader' or 'WebToEpub' to export Wattpad stories as PDFs and other file types. I use a screen recorder to capture print-to-PDFs that aren’t working for me. I slowly scroll through the chapter and record the screen. The resulting video is terrible for later reading, but it’s 100% of what was on the screen, all formatting and images included. This is a terrible way to read a chapter, but it’s short for very small pieces of very visually unique content. I’d then use video to text software to get text out of the video, but that’s a whole other can of worms. I bring this up only as an extreme example of what people are willing to do to save content that a site is trying to prevent them from saving. It’s the digital equivalent of taking a picture of your screen.

Wattpad is a business and ultimately a free platform of stories supported by ads and Wattpad Premium. If it were too easy to download stories then their metrics for daily active users and time spent in app would likely go down. This would make Wattpad a less attractive proposition to advertisers, and less worthy of the Premium dollar that users spend. A download feature would go against the core model of the business, even a “download for offline reading within the app” feature such as they offer with reading lists would be unusual. The feature to download a portable file that can be taken outside of the app and read whenever you want would be very unusual for Wattpad to implement. When you use a workaround to download content from Wattpad, you’re essentially extracting value from their platform without contributing to their engagement metrics for that content. This is a moral dilemma for users of Wattpad, where they have to weigh their desire for ownership of a story with their desire to support the ecosystem that they get the story from for free.

I get that people want to download, though. Is it for offline reading? For archiving? To read on an e-ink Kindle, for instance? The Wattpad App already supports offline reading. For archiving and reading on other devices, however, it’s hard to tell because of the terms of service we’ve put up. To read Wattpad stories on your Kindle, you could try ‘Print to PDF’ and then email the PDF to the email address associated with your Kindle. Amazon will convert it to a format suitable for your Kindle and sync it up for you. The formatting might be a bit terrible, but it’s an option. The major difference between Wattpad and an ebook store is that Wattpad is a social reading platform above all else. The platform is intentionally designed to keep you on the site where you can interact with other readers. Knowing that helps manage your expectations for how easy or not it will be to ‘take’ a story off the site and read it elsewhere.

Making a copy of work you can read online for personal use is often borderline but generally legal in countries that recognize fair use/fair dealing exceptions to copyright. Thus the legality of this method of making a copy is very murky and would probably depend on your location. (I am not a lawyer, and so should not be taken as authority on this matter; fanscooperating to back up writing have worked out a rough agreement on this.) Archive/Wattpad readers who back up their own favorite novels should be aware that doing so could be against Wattpad’s terms of service, even if the work is public and no Technological Protection Measure (TPM) is being circumvented by clicking the “Save to My Library” button that Wattpad doesn’t provide. But that’s not strong protection. As soon as you share a copy you’ve made of a work that you read online, you’re being a pirate — just as you’d be if you shared a recording of a TV show you’d recorded for time-shifting purposes.
