Nostalgia plays a totally different role. Early stories had no nostalgia for the times visited; they were either cautionary or satirical. Modern time travel is drenched in nostalgia, often for a personal or cultural past the protagonist is desperately trying to return to or preserve. The drive isn't curiosity or conquest, but a longing for a lost 'home' in time. The genre has become a vehicle for exploring our collective anxiety about change and our desire to recover what's been lost, making it profoundly melancholic in a way Wells never intended.
The humor's gone! Well, not entirely, but early time travel had a robust strand of comedy and social farce. 'A Connecticut Yankee' is full of slapstick and satire. The absurdity of a modern man in an archaic setting was played for laughs. Modern time travel humor is almost exclusively meta, paradoxical, or deeply dark. It's gallows humor about causing your own grandfather's death, or the ironic hell of a time loop. The pure, joyous fish-out-of-water romp has been replaced by a more cynical, intellect-driven wit.
Anyone else find that modern stories make you anxious about your own choices? The constant 'what if' and butterfly effect stuff can be paralyzing in a fun way. The old stories felt more like watching a documentary about a strange land—interesting, but distant. The new ones feel like they're happening in your own living room, to decisions you made last week. They've brought the existential threat from the cosmos into the personal sphere. It's more effective horror, honestly.

The cocktail hour had just ended when I picked up a video call in the bridal suite. It was Ethan, three years from now. By then, time‑travel tech had matured enough to let him contact me three years into the past.
After enough specific details, I finally believed it. The man on the screen really was Ethan, three years older.
I rubbed my aching ankle and pouted at him through the screen.
"Ethan, smiling at all these guests is exhausting. But the second I remember I actually married you today, I'm happy all over again."
"We're still happy three years from now, right?"
He was leaning back against a headboard, and he didn't answer. His face was flat and unreadable.
Then I heard it: a woman's voice from his end, low and breathy, asking to be kissed.
I froze for a second, then covered my mouth and laughed.
"Is that future me? In broad daylight? Get a room."
Ethan turned the camera into the bed.
My maid of honor was lying there, naked, sprawled across his chest. Her body was covered in hickeys.
He looked straight at me as I started to break, and his voice didn't shift at all. "As soon as the reception ended, I told you I had a client meeting. I went to her room instead."
"Jo, now you know what's coming. The guests haven't gone home yet. If you want a divorce tonight, you can have one. Up to you."
