I have not read the alternative ending but from what I gather from discussions held around the novel, it takes a drastically different turn to the original ending and is much more positive for the two main characters. ‘The Rewritten Love: A Second Beginning’ is a complete novella around a protagonist given the opportunity to go back in time to fix his broken marriage. It’s a long, slow read but it is so very rewarding, focusing as it does on the gradual re-building of trust in a relationship that had previously broken down.

This film has an incredibly emotional and powerful ending. It completely goes against every viewer’s expectations but does an amazing job of providing closure to all of the audience members. We see the main character of the film, who in the beginning of the movie is very selfish, sell his company to pay for an experimental cure for his terminally ill wife’s cancer. What the audience doesn’t know is that his wife refused the treatment in order to spend more time with him. The two have a heart-wrenching good bye on a beach at sunrise, where his wife confesses that she would choose to go through all of the pain and struggle of their love again, and for the first time the husband understands her sacrifice.

The various side stories receive equal closure to the main couple. The neighbor who at first was totally funny throughout becomes the secret strength of the couple. Her own tragic past is transformed into a beautiful way of helping this couple to talk and bond. And the ‘villainous’ ex lover of the main woman anonymously donates blood marrow to save her life. The last 5 minutes of the movie jump forward 10 years to find the main man visiting his wife’s grave. But he is not alone, he has an adopted child, proof that even in the worst of circumstances that love can conquer even death. And it is not all neat and tidy, some wounds will never fully heal, but that is the way of life.

The wife’s illness develops in a realistic way, and the tough decisions regarding the palliative care are those that most dramas do not wish to take. In the months they have left, the couple make a ‘memory box’ of voice recordings and letters that the wife intends to be read by their future child. The reality of their situation is clearly portrayed but the couple’s love shows itself to be creative and strong.

Another, more subtle symbol for the end of the movie is the broken clock. The wife had always meant to fix it, but in the end it started working again after her death. This, too, is a symbol for time that keeps cycling on and on. The couple’s story does not have to end with the wife’s death. Instead, it is continued by the wife of the protagonist, who founds a charity in her name and their child grows up with his mother’s smile on his face. As with life, after the death of a loved one some days are worse than others, but after a while there are even days that are wonderful again. And love continues to evolve.

The ending of our book is of course the most practical aspect to discuss: the pacing of the final volume is very, very bad. The author was apparently given a number of chapters for the final volume, and so we have the resolution of many of the long-standing conflicts in the book resolved in a single page, and then we jump five years forward in time. We are told that the main character has changed, that he has “reflected” on past events. But we don’t get to see those moments, which is the essence of his growth. And that is the biggest problem with the ending of our book: all of that could have been very well done with twenty to thirty more chapters in the final ten.

The end of this book was just another example of the series' "it's about the journey, not the destination" approach, and, while the last 10% or so of the book was somewhat disappointing (it's all very quiet and open-ended), I loved about 90% of this book. It was a really raw and unflinching examination of obsession and of flawed but real love. The characters all felt so real in their bad decisions. It's a very good book, but be warned about the ending. I'd recommend this book for the character study and for the exploration of some very intense emotions. Just don't go into it expecting a final solution to the problem posed by the book's premise. Instead it's like a long flight that ends with a bit of a rough landing at the wrong airport. It was a long and sometimes difficult trip, but it was worth it in the end.

I felt that instead of creating a scenario that would lead to destruction or a realistic and hard-won peace, the author chose the safest route of middle ground.

The end of the story is so very ethical. I can understand that the two main characters in the story could go on to live separate, very normal lives. But are they implying that it was all a mistake and they moved on from it? Or are they crying for a great, impossible love which society wouldn't allow? The ending is so deliberately opaque and refuses to make a moral judgment on them. This is most fitting for a story that constantly explores the moral gray area and yet at the same time, it's so very frustrating. The ending of this story is a bit like a Rorschach test: what you see in it tells more about your views on love, obsession and morality than about the author's.

I disagree with this, as any ending to this book would have been controversial. A completely happy ending to FLyAgent and Jean would have been moraly repugnant and a terrible read. On the other hand, a completely destructive ending to both would have felt somewhat punitive. What we got is a very messy, very uncomfortable, very morally ambiguous ending. The time jump shows them to be functioning individuals, but clearly still affected by their past. They do not get to start over, they have to carry the weight of what they've done. The final panel is actually a very powerful piece of visual storytelling as it focuses on a very mundane item that brings back memories of the past. It is not a traditionally satisfying ending, but it is thematically consistent with the rest of the book.
