Rowan's finale in Queen of Shadows is all i need to feel after everything they went through in the book. After all, he is finally standing by Aelin's side as her equal – no longer just her bodyguard. Their bond is strengthened in so many ways – like helping her build the new Terrasen and seeing her establish herself as the Queen of Terrasen. Sharing a throne with her is all about symbolism – no longer trying to one-up each other for control, they're choosing to rule together.

The biggest thing that stuck with me about Rowan was his Fireheart nickname. When we first meet Rowan he’s this cold Fae warrior, and his being called Fireheart is sort of ironic, but by the end of the book he’s fully become that. His reunion with the rest of the cadre is bittersweet. There’s just this feeling of having grown up and changed so much because of war, but also finding something to fight for that isn’t just vengeance. And the last scene with him is just him quietly watching Aelin sleep, knowing that they’ve earned their peace. That was just my heart broken by Sarah J. Maas.

This offers an interesting take on Rowan’s Fae lore in terms of his typical behavior as an immortal hunter. It is rare that these characters get to grow to the point where they can abandon their typical life and develop in human-like ways. Specifically, Rowan the hunter is traded for co-ruler of Terrasen and it really illustrates just how far he’s come, particularly in terms of how Fae typically tend to be (very set in their ways). Stabilized magic post-war is a really cool element that mirrors the rest of his character development into a more balanced person. Also, that final battle with Lorcan and Gavriel really helped to tie up a lot of loose ends with Rowan’s past self. The omission of Maeve’s influence from his tattoos, however, was perhaps the coolest.

I love this. Rowan, our poor, broken, grieving warrior at the beginning of the series. He ends up rebuilding houses with his bare hands. It’s such an amazing contrast to the man we first met. I love that the development of his relationship with Aelin is from trainer to student, to powerful couple who scare kingdoms, but they still have that wonderful fiery relationship. I can still recall him threatening to chain her to a bed after the war because she was exerting herself too much. He spent centuries guarding his heart and in the end he becomes the most devoted, open-hearted partner in all of fantasy. His final line of the book is even wonderful. He whispers fireheart to her like a promise.

This may be my most favorite part of the entire book: Rowan’s quiet heroic nature in the final pages. Unlike Aelin and her numerous lauded heroics throughout the book, Rowan’s greatest feats are quietly shown in his restraint. He is able to carry Aelin when she can no longer walk, negotiate with Dorian on the borders of Adarlan, and even graciously deal with Aedion. His final act of heroism isn’t some dramatic battle move; instead he chooses to stay when every fiber of his being is telling him to run off and hunt down every remaining Akilan on the planet. This is tremendous growth for a man who once lived by the credo of ‘kill or be killed’. I’m so happy he has found a way to trade in his solitary existence for community.

What happens at the end of Kingdom of Spirit and Shadow?

Much crying happened. And yes, I did shed some tears. Usually, such conclusions leave one staring at the walls for a while. That is not shocking, but rather a very, very slow realization of what has to happen in order for the world to continue. The quiet dignity of the characters in their grief was what affected me the most. None of them raged against the dying of the light. Instead, they accepted it with terrible, maturity-filled sorrow. That was much more real than all of the dramatic death scenes that had to take place in the book.

How does 'Shadow and Bone' end? Will there be a sequel?

The ending of Alina and Mal was "and they lived quietly ever after" which may not be every reader's cup of tea, particularly if you're rooting for powerful female protagonists to remain powerful. However, this ending was fitting for Alina as she had grown from reluctant hero to person who refused to be burdened by destiny. The sequels go for a completely different model of growth in the face of great power in Zoya who grows and develops into a leader who wields her immense power successfully. If you're looking for an alternative way in which the MC can deal with the transition to great power and grow as a result then Zoya's story is very different and equally as satisfying in the end as Alina's was - she ultimately wields her immense power successfully on her own terms.

How does 'Shadow Slave: The Ascension' end?

No neat ending here. And that’s kind of the point. We come back to the central idea of the story: you can’t escape your nature. You can only try to deal with it as best you can. And the protagonist doesn’t get a fresh start. Instead, he’s transported to a new world of difficulty and he’s ensnared in a new prison of his own making. But it’s a powerful, unsatisfying read for conventional tastes.

when do rowan and aelin get together

This is very different from Sam, her first love who she lost horribly in the prequels. With Rowan, Aelin is getting to have a second chance at a relationship like that. And it’s so much more mature and more equal than her relationship with Sam ever was. It’s also so much more scary because of the risk of loss involved. Her ‘getting together’ with Rowan is her choosing to love again after losing so much and being so alone for so long. Her choice to love Rowan again wasn’t a moment, but a series of choices to be vulnerable, culminating with her finally accepting that she is loved in the cave in KoA.

What happens at the end of Their Lycan Queen?

The ending of this story is just a masterclass in fan service. It gives you the big Lyra-mate bond moment, the defeating of the big bad, and the triumphant ascendence of our heroine as Queen, but it elevates each of these to make them more than just check boxes to mark off. The mate bond is put to the test in a trial by fire of sorts, and made stronger and better because of it. The defeat of the villain is satisfying not because Lyra killed him, but because he was rejected by all the packs he had been manipulating. And her coronation as Queen is not a big, flashy, crowning type of deal. Rather, her new status as Queen is simply acknowledged by the people because she has earned it through her actions, and they start simply calling her "my queen".

What happens at the end of 'In My Father's Shadow'?

The Wikipedia summary of the ending is terrible and so reduces it down to ‘Jamie reconciles with his father’. Which is a really reductive summary because reconciliation implies a return to some previous good state and Jamie and his father had never had that. What actually occurs is the introduction of two complex adults. For the first time. With no guarantee that anything will come of it. No, they are establishing acquaintance, fragile as that is. And that is the whole point of the novel: building something from scratch in the face of crushing parents and a dynamic that has been in place for so long. To call it “reconciliation” is to do a disservice to the painful, beautiful work of building something new out of the wreckage of their past. And Wikipedia is simply not up to the task of capturing the nuances of this complex novel.

Why does the Queen of Rot and Pain end that way?

Oh man, that ending was so terrible and amazing at the same time. I’ve seen some people call it ‘unfair’ but I think it was so fitting for the main character. The whole story followed the Queen as she tried to run from her past but instead she dragged it behind her and it slowly consumed her. The end isn’t just about her physical demise but also about the cost of her vengeance. How it slowly hollows you out until there is nothing left to save. The imagery of the rot consuming everything was so beautiful. I didn’t need a happy ending or a deus ex machina to make everything okay. It was raw and ugly and I loved every minute of it.

Just following this thread to see how fanychly people can argue over endings to a story. One person calls it perfect bittersweet, another rushed trash. I am reading the book so have been skimming through these ‘spoilers’ with one eye closed. My intrigue with the debate is far greater than my interest in the actual ending. Carry on.

How does 'The Queen of Nothing' end?

At its core, the ending of The Folk of the Air series satisfies in showing Jude come to terms with who she is. The main character of the series went into it with so little and learned so much. For most of her journey, Jude grappled with her fragile, mortal human nature and the harsh, disconnected Faerie nature she adopted along the way. Reconciling these two contrasting traits of Jude’s nature to form the Queen of Elfhame – a fully formed human with all her might, tenacity and cunning – is the core of her journey in the end. HuDwould never go ‘soft’. No, this ending shows Jude to be wise in her new role as Queen of Elfhame. And it also shows how her love for Cardan wasn’t a weakness. In fact, it’s the core of their powerful new alliance, securing all her ambitions. For Jude, love doesn’t have to mean loss of self. In fact, she can be her tough, dodgy, downright survivor type and still be someone who loves, is trusted, shows mercy. In fact, she creates her own place, her own way. She achieves her greatest goal as a completely self-determined individual in a world dominated by predestination and bloodlines.

What happens at the end of Daemons of the Shadow Realm, Vol. 1?

I was also rather affected by the scenes after the final battle. After saving his town from destruction, parts of it were left in ruins, and though Hyou had saved many lives, the remaining civilians would stare at him in horror, as if he had become a monster just like the one he had fought. It seemed that saving his little sister with his strange power had cost him his place in the community, and in the final pages we see Hyou looking at his hands in shock and dismay. It was an ending that was far more introspective than I had expected, and shows that Hyou is an interesting hero.
