Does The Fallen Movie Have A Sequel Or Spin-Off?

Whether you are referring to the 1998 cult thriller “The Fallen Ones” starring Denzel Washington, or the 2013 movie “The Fallen” based on the popular YA book by Lauren Kate, the answer is the same. There are no sequels. While the book series by Lauren Kate continues on with “Torment”, “Passion”, and “Rapture”, there were no sequels to the movie based on the first novel “The Fallen” by Lauren Kate. In fact, studios had considered making more movies from the book series, but none were made when the first didn’t perform better at the box office.

In summary, there are no sequels to the two best known versions of ‘Fallen’. If you enjoyed the story, perhaps you would like to read the rest of the novel (if it was YA) or search out similar movies to the Denzel film. If you tell me which ‘Fallen’ we are talking about (i.e. YA or thriller, year, lead actor etc) I can tell you where to go from there.

In viewing sequels for Fallen, I have to classify two different movies. For starters, the Denzel Washington starrer from 1998 does not have any sequels (nor have any of the directors/ producers involved made any continuations of the film). A tightly wound and solid thrill ride, it ends where it does and does not call for a continuation. Indeed, there would be little in terms of a storyline to build off of in adapting Fallen into a feature length (or television) installment(s). So, none exist to speak of outside of some dreadful AM processed tribute videos.
On the other hand, the Fallen adaptation of the Lauren Kate book does have the potential for sequels (following Fallen is Torment, followed by Passion and concluding with Rapture). Alas, it looks as though the angst infested, over wrought (in terms of events) group of characters (arguably Fallens and angels alike) will not receive a continuation of their wildly confusing story in cinematic format. Though a long shot, there are already a couple of book adaptations proposed to serve in lieu of any sequels (if granted).

However, if you are referring to the 2014 adaptation of Lauren Kate’s Fallen YA novel series, then unfortunately you will find no sequels in cinematic form. Despite hopes from fans of the book series for a movie adaptation of the subsequent novels Torment, Passion and Rapture to continue the story in film form, none were made. This is not to say that there are no sequels to Fallen, in fact the novels comprise a full saga and can be read by fans of the film. If, however, you want more of the same style of movie then hopefully you shall find the following of some interest.

If you’re looking for something similar to watch or read, for the darker, more philosophical type of film like the 1998 version of Fallen I would recommend films like Angel Heart or Constantine. For YA fans of romance with a fallen angel twist, I would recommend finishing out the rest of the Fallen series by Lauren Kate as well as other novels such as Hush, Hush and its subsequent sequels. There are also a couple of independent films and international films with the same title Fallen, but from different years. If you can provide me with more information or even an actor in one of these films I can try to do some more research and possibly even track down an interview with the director of one of these obscure sequels.

This movie is a time capsule to a by-gone era of practical creature effects and strongly grounded characters that had a realistic downer of an ending. Studios today don't make to many mid-budget R-rated supernatural thrillers anymore (with the main cast) because there is not enough profit in them for most studios, and most of them end very negatively (i.e. few happy endings).

In a way, the absence of a sequel toSaving Private Ryan works as a film. It preserves the original as a kind of relic from a bygone era in Hollywood when studios were willing to take smart, adult-oriented risks and produce a large, well-made, mid-budget film with a star. The follow-up would undoubtedly be a much safer, PG-13, big budget, CGI-driven, action-horror film with a sequel-bait ending. The original is better off on its own.
