Which File Formats For Kindle Work Best For Manga?

Looking to start reading manga on my Kindle Paperwhite but overwhelmed by file formats. Should I stick to AZW3, convert to KFX, or use MOBI for best panel quality and navigation?

Therefore, reading a manga on a Kindle in CBZ format is very similar to reading a physical copy of the manga.

I find MOBI and AZW3 to be the best formats for manga since they allow for high quality images and proper formatting. EPUB can work too but sometimes converting to EPUB can result in the panels being out of order or low quality images. PDFs are kind of a mixed bag since they maintain the formatting of the book but the text can end up being too small to read unless you zoom in a lot. CBZs are also a good option since they are essentially a zip file of images and Kindle handles them very well for full page art. In terms of sideloading, MOBI and AZW3 are your best bet for a smooth reading experience.

I really enjoy reading manga on my Kindle. I’ve played around with lots of different formats but so far CBZ and AZW3 have been the best for me. As a simple zip of images the art is preserved beautifully and loads quickly on the Kindle. AZW3 files are also great for purchasing officially supported manga titles as they allow for all of the standard features such as bookmarks and highlighting.

MOBI is decent, but I wouldn’t count on it being around in the long run. Some EPUB converters do a decent job, but the results are generally inconsistent. I avoid PDFs because of the complicated page turning. If you’re looking for a good balance of quality and convenience, I would recommend going with the CBZ and AZW3 formats. They make Kindle manga reading almost as good as having the physical book.

Comics purchased through ComiXology these days are often simply Amazon storefronts for Kindle comics, while subscription comics such as Shonen Jump are typically consumed through their own dedicated apps rather than on your Kindle. Free and legal manga such as provided by Manga Plus is read through their own app as well. The biggest barrier to new users learning to download and read eBooks is the learning curve associated with terms such as CBZ, AZW3, Calibre and heuristic processing which will mean little to nothing to someone who wants to read ‘Attack on Titan’ and is happy to purchase it from the official store regardless of its limitations because it is so easy to download and read. The DIY route is great fun for hobbyists but a confusing and often fruitless nightmare for casual readers. What is best for any individual will often depend upon their level of technical literacy and ability to adapt to tricky situations and also upon the technical ‘specification’ of the individual file in question. In essence there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this debate which is why it continues to endure.

Even within a single genre, different manga require different things. A story-heavy dialogue-driven work can often get by with very poor formatting and is read just fine in a basic PDF zoomed to whatever size is needed. But a perfectly choreographed action/mecha/fantasy sequence, dependent on tight control of panel flow to sustain its kinetic energy, demands the precise control of a proper Kindle AZW3 file. For action/fantasy I expect rather more from a file than I do from a romance/comedy. And a slow-burn drama-style story with a largely straight-forward (i.e. story-heavy) panel order might even get by in something rather more basic. So the best file format of all is the one determined by the context of the work itself.

For a practical constraint, file size is quite important. High quality manga volumes can range in file size from 200-300MB. While on a 32GB Kindle (like my Oasis) this doesn’t really matter too much, an 8GB Kindle can get filled up quite quickly with even average sized manga. MOBI files for comics are generally smaller, but they lack features and you have to adjust the compression settings in Calibre to try and get the file size down. This can have a detrimental effect on the overall quality of the read though. As it stands, my preferred format for comics has to be one that lets me carry my wanted library with me, and not have to constantly delete books to make sure I’ve got room for new ones.
