Which File Formats For Kindle Work Best For Manga?
Looking to start reading manga on my Kindle Paperwhite but overwhelmed by file formats. Should I stick to AZW3, convert to KFX, or use MOBI for best panel quality and navigation?

Native Kindle format (AZW3) and MOBI converted from that format make good manga readers because they preserve images and layout just as you read them. PDFs formatted for reading on small screens can also work but will typically need to be zoomed in order to read them on a screen. Fans of serialized manga with strong visual elements, delivered on an episodic basis, may find daily updated chapters in ‘INFINITE SHADES OF GAY’ a satisfying read. The chapters are structured to read quickly, with crisp, detailed scenes that paint a vivid picture in the reader’s mind, one scene at a time.

For reading manga on Kindle, MOBI, AZW3 and CBZ are the formats to choose from. Amazon’s MOBI and AZW3 formats are the best quality and have the best support on Amazon Kindle devices. CBZ (or CBR) formats are simple collections of images, which, unlike MOBI or AZW3, aren’t compressed or reformatted in order to be read on a Kindle. Therefore, reading a manga on a Kindle in CBZ format is very similar to reading a physical copy of the manga.
While EPUB can work for digital manga provided one has the correct converter (I recommend Calibre) to properly format the pages to have the correct number of panels per page, PDF is really the only other format worth looking into as it retains the original layout. However, the image will often have to be zoomed, defeating the purpose of reading the digital version in the first place. KFX is another option, but it is quite difficult to sideload in addition to not offering enough advantages over the AZW3 to make it worth the extra effort. Therefore, for Amazon-purchased eManga, I would recommend AZW3, while for fan scans and personal manga collections, CBZ is the way to go.

I find MOBI and AZW3 to be the best formats for manga since they allow for high quality images and proper formatting. EPUB can work too but sometimes converting to EPUB can result in the panels being out of order or low quality images. PDFs are kind of a mixed bag since they maintain the formatting of the book but the text can end up being too small to read unless you zoom in a lot. CBZs are also a good option since they are essentially a zip file of images and Kindle handles them very well for full page art. In terms of sideloading, MOBI and AZW3 are your best bet for a smooth reading experience.

I really enjoy reading manga on my Kindle. I’ve played around with lots of different formats but so far CBZ and AZW3 have been the best for me. As a simple zip of images the art is preserved beautifully and loads quickly on the Kindle. AZW3 files are also great for purchasing officially supported manga titles as they allow for all of the standard features such as bookmarks and highlighting.
MOBI is decent, but I wouldn’t count on it being around in the long run. Some EPUB converters do a decent job, but the results are generally inconsistent. I avoid PDFs because of the complicated page turning. If you’re looking for a good balance of quality and convenience, I would recommend going with the CBZ and AZW3 formats. They make Kindle manga reading almost as good as having the physical book.

First, consider your source. Comics purchased through ComiXology these days are often simply Amazon storefronts for Kindle comics, while subscription comics such as Shonen Jump are typically consumed through their own dedicated apps rather than on your Kindle. Free and legal manga such as provided by Manga Plus is read through their own app as well. So once again, the ‘best format for Kindle’ is really a question for people who are either reading comics outside of Amazon-licensed channels, sideloading their own files for reading on their Kindle, or perhaps are a part of the comics-archiving community – i.e. the DIY crowd, the archivists, and those looking to read comic books that are not currently available through digital channels.
