You can experience Wattpad totally for free by downloading the Wattpad app from your device’s app store. It’s totally legitimate and safe and there’s tons of content. The mobile experience is actually really cool because you can read in little chunks. There’s also the option to download individual stories so you can read them offline when you’re on the move or have no internet. I’ve wasted hours of my life browsing the horror tag and finding tons of super original and creepy stories that you wouldn’t find in a normal bookstore. One minor complaint is that there are video ads for chapters, but that can be kind of broken from a reading perspective anyway. I have been listening to ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ on Librivox for weeks now. Also worth a look is the free Libby app which connects to your local library and provides access to a large collection of audiobooks which are read professionally by a number of actors although not all of them are free. TikTok is also an amazing resource for finding users who create short little clips of book readings. Sometimes they even read the whole book, but other times they just do little snippets and it’s a great way to discover new books. I’ve also been loving the podcast ‘LeVar Burton Reads’ where he reads and analyzes short stories, however they aren’t full length books. The world of free book narrations is vast and can be found in hidden corners of the internet by things like amateur YouTube channels and even subreddits that only post free resources for book narration.

I also love BookBub as they often include romance eBooks in their daily deals and I can even find some free ones for a limited time. Most of them are Kindle eBooks so you will need a Kindle or a free Kindle app. If you want something different again then Tapas (which is read chapter by chapter rather like a comic and can be read online for free in bite sized chunks) has a number of romantic comics and stories. Also Amazon Kindle free section has, for me, been a source of some very good self-published romances (yes really!).

For example, while there are hardly any light novel audio dramas available in English, many very popular Chinese and Japanese light novels have full-cast audio drama versions. I have mentioned used bookstores on here before, but for online/free the Internet Archive’s Open Library is a great digital lending library of books, which you can borrow in digital format for a set time period. It has a decent selection of finance books, particularly older ones and seminal works. You do need to create an account which is free and the Open Library is a non-profit project. In addition to these used bookstores, corporate annual reports and even individual shareholder letters can be very valuable. For instance the letters from Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway are available on the Berkshire website for free every year, and are an amazing insight into the world of investment and business. In raw and unstructured form they are even more insightful than 99% of the finance books available today.

There are lots of free websites where you can read books online without signing up to a website first. For classic books that are no longer copyrighted there’s the wonderful Project Gutenberg (long established) and ManyBooks (my current favorite with a great variety of free books of many different types in different formats too). For free audiobooks there’s Librivox, which features free public domain audiobooks for download, all of them read by volunteers. On the other hand, Open Library allows users to borrow digital books, many of which can be checked out by users without an account. Additionally, Classic Shorts offers short stories and essays that users can instantly read online for free without having to sign up for anything.

I get free legal thrillers from BookBub – many free books are offered on a daily basis. Occasionally a publisher such as Tor will make an eBook free to download for a period of time. Open Library at Archive.org is also a good source of free eBooks – you create an account and then borrow books. This is all to be done within the bounds of the authorized distribution of the copyrighted work.

Of course, there’s a lot of fun in comparing book to show. But unlike the very faithful first season of television, there are large and soon increasing deviations from the original text as the season goes on. To do this sort of comparison, you’d really need to read the whole, unedited text – something that a free sample would not be able to give you past the introductory setup. The free sample is like the pilot episode of a show. If you like the pilot, you can then subscribe to the channel to watch the rest of the episodes.
