I get free legal thrillers from BookBub – many free books are offered on a daily basis. Occasionally a publisher such as Tor will make an eBook free to download for a period of time. Open Library at Archive.org is also a good source of free eBooks – you create an account and then borrow books. This is all to be done within the bounds of the authorized distribution of the copyrighted work.

One can readily find free legal reads when searching through public domain sites such as ManyBooks and Feedbooks. While they often have many classics available in eBook form (including PDF) as well as numerous Independently published works, also available in eBook form (including PDF) are libraries and their apps such as Libby for borrowable eBooks (in eBook form) when one has a library card. Often universities post up the academic novels and literature that have been published under open-access agreements. Just be sure to verify the site’s legitimacy before you start downloading all of the free legal reads available online. There’s plenty there for you to read!

Getting your hands on free novels legally is far easier than most people would assume. I find plenty of novels on Google Play Books Free section. You can filter by genre and then download a PDF or EPUB to a reader of your choice. Occasionally, an author will release a book for free on Amazon Kindle. Just search for ‘0.00’ in the store. Then there are the fan translations of older public domain novels and I have found a couple of these by searching. However, remember these are unofficial works so make sure to check out official sources like Project Gutenberg to avoid downloading something that could be considered piracy. Just look in the right places!

You can download free novels from a variety of sites. There’s Project Gutenberg which is a huge collection of over 60,000 free eBooks. Most of the books on the site are classics and have been written by authors whose copyrights have expired. There are lots of great novels here including ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and ‘Frankenstein’. You can download them in a variety of formats including PDF.

Open Library offers free e-books including many very modern titles. The books are offered through controlled digital lending so you may have to wait for a title to become available but it’s a very good service. For more modern work by published authors it’s also worth checking their own website for free PDFs of their books as well as Smashwords where many authors offer their books for free through the site. Remember to check the copyright status of any work before downloading to make sure you’re not breaking any laws.

Which sites offer legal pdf for books of bestselling novels?

Looking for a legal PDF version of a bestseller? Try purchasing it from Google Play Books or from online eBook retailer Rakuten Kobo. Many authors and publishers also now sell eBooks direct from their own websites. Find out if your local library stocks eBooks on services such as OverDrive and Libby and borrow with your library card number. Avoid sketchy free PDF sites that may contain pirated copies of books – buy from reputable retailers and support the author.

The Archives of Nethys is the legally free resource for Paizo's SRD, posted on the website. It has all the rules. That Paizo can make money selling the nice hardcover edition of the rules and the nice adventures while at the same time making the rules themselves legally free for use by anyone, to play any game they wish, is cool. The website is a little bare, but completely functional. I have it bookmarked on every device I use. The best way to get information on anything at the table during play is to use the website – far better than to have to search through a PDF during the heat of combat. And while there is no free PDF, what Paizo has done is to provide something far more useful to actual players. Use the website – it’s the right way to do it.

Is it legal to download books as pdf for free online?

My last thought for the day concerns discoverability vs. deprivation. I do think that piracy often serves as a discovery model for authors – allowing readers to ‘try before they buy’. However, very quickly it can devolve into depravation – people consuming media without ever contributing to the author’s earnings in any way. This ‘discovery’ model needs to transition into ‘supporting this author’. So you used that free PDF to ‘try’ an author – great! Now support them if you like their work. Buy their next book, pre-order it, get it from the library (since they paid the license for you), spread the word online… discover an author via the free sample, then become a paying reader for subsequent work by that author. That’s a sustainable relationship for the stories you love.

What are the best sites to read novels for free online?

13 Answers2026-07-27
For free Asian web novels, translation quality reads a million times better than garbage. High-quality translations of original works of fiction (even “free” ones like those found on Wuxiaworld or Volare, for instance) far outstrip heaps of locally-hosted “aggregated” copy—all “translated” via some half-baked program of semi-automated re-pulsing via interpolation of works from paying translation groups. Take the time to click on to the original translators and their providers—huge differences between extremely readable original translated chapters and mangled stuff “summarized” for your reading “convenience” by web novel “aggregators”.

Can I find City of Bones book free online legally?

I had a tough time finding City of Bones to read for free legally. But it is out there. There is a Twitter thread about it that lists out a number of ways to find free copies. Apparently in some countries you can find older editions of books in public domain on websites such as Google Books. The author Cassandra Clare occasionally posts up free chapters of her upcoming books on her website during the anniversary of the release of the previous book. She even puts up free short stories from time to time if you sign up for her newsletter. Audiobooks like Audible often offer the first book in a series for free to draw in new listeners. That’s how I read the first book in the Six of Crows series for free. Be sure to cancel your trial after a while if you don’t intend to continue, though. And buying a used copy of a book and saving up for it is way more satisfying than risking your computer to malware on some scam site to read a free copy of City of Bones.

free novels to read offline

I found this on Reddit (unexpected source of books for me). r/FreeEBOOKS is a constantly updating list of free Amazon books and others. I follow that subreddit and every now and then I download a book that catches my eye when it shows up at the top of my feed. It’s a firehose of content, but there are a lot of great books in there, too. I now have hundreds of books on my Kindle that I never would have found on my own.

Where can I find a light novel to read online for free?

Pivoting slightly – have you considered audio dramas or even audio book versions of these light novels? For example, while there are hardly any light novel audio dramas available in English, many very popular Chinese and Japanese light novels have full-cast audio drama versions. Often these have been fan-subbed and uploaded to YouTube or Bilibili with subtitles, so it’s easy to find and watch for free. These are a different medium to reading the novels themselves, but all telling the same story and in some ways even better. Then there are also the many YouTube channels reading out light novel chapters – often amateur but completely free to watch, and perfect for when you’ve been reading for hours and your eyes are tired, but you still want that fix of a good story. Such videos are scattered everywhere and of very uneven quality, but there must be hundreds of thousands of them out there.

Can I find free light novels on Amazon Kindle legally?

5 Answers2025-08-02
It’s much easier than you think to read light novels free. The Devil Is a Part-Timer! and other novels are included in Amazon’s Prime Reading selection, meaning you can read them for free if you’re a Prime member. Alternatively, many permanent free Kindle books such as The Alchemist Who Survived are listed in the Free Kindle Books section. I’ve even stumbled upon novels I wouldn’t have otherwise thought to check out, like Ascendance of a Bookworm, here. Even novels typically sold for premium prices such as the Sword Art Online Progressive omnibus can be had for free during certain campaigns. Just make sure to check the “Sold by” label to ensure that it is the publisher or an official source offering it for free.

Can I download The Secret of Secrets novel as a free pdf?

10 Answers2025-11-17
I’m excited you asked about this — short version: you probably can’t legally snag a free PDF of 'The Secret of Secrets' unless your library makes it available to borrow. Dan Brown’s book was published in 2025 by Doubleday and is sold as a new hardcover, ebook, and audio release, so it’s under normal copyright protection like any recent bestseller. That said, there are perfectly legal, zero-cost ways to read it if you don’t want to buy. Public libraries often carry hot new titles as physical copies, and many also offer ebook lending through services like Libby/OverDrive or Hoopla — you sign in with your library card and borrow for a couple of weeks, no pirates required. OverDrive/Libby supports browser reading, EPUB/PDF downloads, and even Kindle delivery for U.S. patrons. I usually wait for my library hold and feel guilty for the first five minutes, then totally nerd out when I finally get my hands on the book — nothing beats reading a new Dan Brown on a rainy afternoon.
