Man, the classic answer is still the OverDrive app, though they're trying to phase it out for Libby. It still works! If Libby feels too modern for you, OverDrive's older interface might be more comfortable. Both use the same library backend.
The hold system on Libby is a beautiful lesson in patience in our instant-gratification world. It makes finally getting that notification email feel like a genuine event.
I kinda miss the physicality of checking out a CD audiobook from the library, but I don't miss driving there, or disc 7 being scratched beyond repair. The apps are a net win.
Libby's tagline should be 'The reason I finally got a library card again.' It made the entire process of borrowing digital content feel seamless and modern, not like dealing with a bureaucracy from 1995.
The biggest challenge for libraries is budget. They can only buy so many digital copies. So if you love a service, tell your library! Support their funding so they can buy more licenses.

On my way home, I saved a witch from a rogue attack. She thanked me with a small vial of potion, which would let me hear other people’s thoughts.
That night, at the pack banquet, I heard my mate’s thoughts.
‘Serena just bought the sexiest lingerie. I need to find some excuse to ditch Aurora tonight.’
A second voice cut in, a woman’s.
‘She has no idea every time Lucian says he’s working late, he’s with me. We’ve slept together so many times now.’
‘Once I’m pregnant with Lucian’s child, he’ll have every reason to break the mate bond with her. And when he becomes Alpha, I’ll be the Luna.’
I almost laughed out loud. What Serena didn’t know was that Lucian was the Alpha’s illegitimate son. He’d never inherit anything.
I was already running through how to make them pay when another voice broke through. It came from the man standing next to Serena, the shabby boyfriend everyone in this pack looked down on.
‘How am I supposed to tell her I’m the heir to the Alpha King?’
My eyes went wide. I kept my face blank and walked straight up to him.
“Hey. Mind if I get your number?”
When Lyla threatens her Alpha's authority, she doesn't expect him to banish her from the pack. But he does, and only moments after stepping outside her door, someone attacks her and leaves her for dead. And then the Alpha of her rival pack arrives. But instead of finishing her off, he saves her . . . even though it's against the law. Now they're both in danger. But they can't seem to stay away from each other.
My only complaint is that sometimes the library's digital license expires on a title I'm halfway through. It's rare, but it has happened. The book just disappears from my loans. Libby usually gives a warning if it's about to happen, but not always. It's a weird, disconcerting feeling. Just a reminder that we're borrowing a licensed file, not a physical object. Always finish popular books before their due date!
The apps aren't perfect. They can occasionally be buggy after an update. The download process sometimes fails and needs a restart. But for a free public service, the reliability is remarkably high. The trade-off is more than worth it. A minor hiccup once in a while is a small price to pay for a limitless library in your pocket. The development teams seem responsive to fixing major issues that pop up in reviews.
Hoopla's model is different—no waitlists, but you get a set number of 'borrows' per month. I like that for impulse listens when I don't want to commit to a hold. The audio quality is solid, and they have a decent selection of independent and niche titles that my library doesn't carry on Libby.
I'm just amazed this is all free. We pay for Netflix and Spotify without a second thought, but my library card gives me access to thousands of audiobooks and I didn't pay a cent extra. It feels like a secret. Shout out to librarians everywhere for making this happen.
