Honestly, I just look at the holds list at my local library. It's a perfect snapshot. The top 50 are always a mix of the latest book club darling (often historical fiction or family drama), the newest Stephen King (horror/thriller), a popular fantasy sequel, and a dozen romance novels from authors like Emily Henry. The genres dominating that real-world waitlist are romance, thriller, fantasy, and literary-ish book club fiction. It's not just about sales; it's about active demand from readers who are willing to wait weeks. That's a powerful indicator of what people are actually, eagerly reading.

Don't sleep on the absolute dominance of fanfiction as a category of 'most read' material. If you aggregate all the words consumed on Archive of Our Own or FanFiction.net, the genres that dominate are transformative works based on existing IPs, which often fall into romance, hurt/comfort, and alternate universe fics. The sheer volume is staggering. It's a parallel publishing universe that doesn't show up on traditional bestseller lists but represents a colossal amount of daily reading. The most popular fandoms drive specific genres; 'Supernatural' spawned endless angst and found family fics, while 'Harry Potter' is a hub for every subgenre imaginable. In terms of raw eyeball hours, this ecosystem is a titan.

Content Warning ️
Carnal temptations is extremely spicy and intended for mature audiences only. It contains graphic adult content, intense taboo relationships, power play, dubious consent, and morally gray characters. Reader discretion is strongly advised.
In this dripping-wet collection of forbidden steamy tales,a rebellious college brat gets exactly what she deserves in the first tale, bent over her desk, stretched and pounded senseless while he teaches her the real meaning of discipline.
From there, every fantasy turns darker and nastier.
Spoiled royals claim their defiant knights and maids on thrones and palace floors, claiming throats raw under crown and silk.
Best friends cross every line in sweaty, drenched threesomes.
CEOs wreck their secretaries over conference tables, while twisted Doms bind, flog, choke, and claim their willing (and unwilling) subs until they reach climax and scream.
This is not romance.
This is pure, primal, taboo-shattering filth, where power, lust, and obsession collide in the wettest, most depraved ways possible.

My two cents: dominance is seasonal. In summer, it’s page-turning thrillers and beach romances. In fall, as awards season ramps up, it’s literary fiction and big biography. Around the holidays, feel-good reads and giftable hardcovers take over. So the ‘most read’ list is a moving target. A genre might dominate July but be absent in January. The only constant is that readers are always looking for something that fits their mood and the time of year.
You know, lists of 'best books in the world' always end up leaning heavily on literary fiction. It's the genre critics and institutions seem to default to, prioritizing prose style, thematic depth, and cultural impact over pure entertainment value. Classic titles like 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' or 'Ulysses' dominate those spaces. They're brilliant, but it does make you wonder if 'best' is being conflated with 'most critically acclaimed'.
Fantasy and sci-fi rarely break into the very top tier of those lists, despite having massive global readerships. There's a hierarchy at play where certain genres are seen as more 'serious' by default. It feels a bit outdated, honestly.
Looking at global bestseller lists over the past decade, it's really a two-horse race with some consistent runners-up. Crime thrillers and contemporary romance absolutely own the top spots year after year. You can't go five minutes without a new twisty detective novel or a heart-wrenching love story hitting number one.
That said, I'd argue the dominance is partly a reflection of how we define 'best-selling'—it's often about massive, reliable audiences buying the latest from a handful of household-name authors like James Patterson or Colleen Hoover. Genres with intense but narrower fandoms, like epic fantasy, might have monumental sales for a single release but fewer consistent top-ten placements.
Sci-fi and fantasy definitely have their mega-hitters, especially when a series like 'Harry Potter' or a author like Brandon Sanderson drops a new book. But for steady, week-in-week-out presence on international lists, it's hard to beat the broad appeal of a good mystery or a relatable romantic drama. The data from places like The New York Times or Amazon charts backs this up pretty solidly.
Isn't it mostly just the giants of the 19th and early 20th centuries? Dickens, Dostoevsky, Twain. Their works are public domain now, so you see them published in a million cheap editions, given away free on e-readers, and bundled in collections.
That inflates the 'sales' numbers in a weird way. Are we counting every 99-cent paperback from a no-name publisher? If so, then 'classic literature' as a category probably wins by a landslide through sheer multiplicity of available copies and editions across the globe for over a century.
