How Did Gin Conan First Meet The Black Organization Members?

It's one of those cold-open setups in 'Detective Conan' that hooks you hard: Shinichi Kudo tails a pair of suspicious men after spotting a clandestine handoff, and things snowball from there. In that original confrontation he catches sight of Gin and Vodka — two men in dark suits who don’t behave like ordinary criminals. When he gets too close they overpower him; Gin forces him to swallow a mysterious experimental drug called APTX 4869, expecting it to kill him. Instead of dying, Shinichi shrinks down into a young child and adopts the alias Conan Edogawa to hide from the Organization that created the poison. That moment — violent, cold, and utterly life-changing — is how Conan first became entangled with the Black Organization as their unintended victim rather than a member or mere bystander. After that initial, brutal meeting, encounters with the Organization become more episodic and tension-filled. As Conan, he slowly crosses paths again and again with operatives: Gin and Vodka reappear multiple times, always throwing shadows over cases, while other key members like Vermouth, Chianti, Korn, and more show up through the series’ long, drip-fed arcs. Those later meetings often happen because a case brushes up against the Organization’s business — an assassination, a shady pharmaceutical experiment, a missing person who knows too much — and Conan has to juggle leading investigations while concealing his true identity. Some of those reunions are near-misses with terrifyingly close calls; others are dramatic set pieces where Conan barely escapes or manages to unmask an operative’s cover. The series does a great job of making each encounter feel like a chess move, with Conan trying to gather clues while the Organization tests and probes him, sometimes unaware that their intended target is still very much alive in a child’s body. What I love about the whole setup is how it flips the usual detective narrative into a slow-burn cat-and-mouse. That first violent meeting is the linchpin — it explains the stakes and why Conan keeps chasing them, and it colors every later interaction with bitter irony: the kid who can’t be taken seriously by adults is actually the same brilliant teen they tried to erase. Watching Conan piece together the Organization’s structure, identities, and motives over years of cases feels like following a long, tense mystery novel where every small victory is hard-won. It’s one of the reasons I keep rewatching and rereading parts of 'Detective Conan' — the mix of personal vendetta, clever sleuthing, and those rare, heart-pounding reunions with Gin and the others keeps the series addictive in the best way.
