I've always been fascinated by the story of Stephen in the Bible. He was one of the first deacons chosen by the apostles to help distribute food to widows, but he became much more than that. Stephen was filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, performing miracles and speaking with wisdom. His boldness in preaching about Jesus angered some religious leaders, leading to his arrest. During his trial, Stephen gave a powerful speech recounting Israel's history and accusing the leaders of resisting the Holy Spirit. This enraged them so much that they dragged him out of the city and stoned him to death. What stands out to me is how Stephen remained faithful until the end, even praying for his killers as he died, echoing Jesus' words on the cross. His martyrdom actually sparked the spread of Christianity, as believers scattered and shared the gospel everywhere they went.

Stephen's story in Acts 6-7 is one of the most moving accounts in the New Testament. He was a Hellenistic Jew selected as one of the seven deacons, but his ministry quickly went beyond serving tables. Stephen's spiritual power was undeniable - he did great wonders and signs among the people, which brought him into conflict with certain synagogue leaders.

When they couldn't defeat him in debate, they falsely accused him of blasphemy. His trial before the Sanhedrin became an opportunity for Stephen to deliver one of the longest speeches in Acts, tracing God's work through Abraham, Joseph, Moses and the prophets. He boldly confronted the council about their history of rejecting God's messengers, culminating in their rejection of Jesus.

The reaction was violent. They gnashed their teeth at him, but Stephen looked up and saw a vision of Jesus standing at God's right hand. When he described this, they covered their ears and rushed him out to stone him. What's remarkable is that even while being killed, Stephen followed Jesus' example - committing his spirit to God and asking forgiveness for his murderers. A young Saul (later Paul) witnessed this and approved of the killing, though this event may have later contributed to his conversion. Stephen's death marked a turning point where persecution scattered believers, actually helping spread Christianity beyond Jerusalem.
