What’s interesting is that this unsophisticated book has found a space in the popular culture of our country. The book is crude and non-stop, but it’s also endearing in a way. It’s escapism. I have a copy with me, thanks to a borrow from a friend (hidden under his mattress, incidentally). It’s an indelible read that seems to have come from a different era altogether. This is the only must-read for those interested in India’s vast underground pulp fiction scene. It’s cringe-worthy in parts and pretty campy too. But then that’s the book in a nutshell.

If you’re in the pulp reader’s club or just plain curious to see how a subculture lives, Mastram is the entry point for you. Be warned: there’s no room for subtlety here!

The pacing of this book is breakneck – there is little to no development of characters or a detailed description of the world they are living in. A chapter could easily start with a depiction of a person in a marriage, followed by a few pages detailing their betrayal, a few more detailing their attempt at suicide, and then a miracle that allows them to recover from their attempts within the span of ten pages or so. The writer seems to be operating under the delusion that if he does not move at the breakneck pace of a suspense novel within the space of a few minutes, the reader will lose interest and the book will be put down. This creates a surreal, even surrealistic, world that is often characterized by a complete abandonment of the writer’s duty to provide a logical, plausible narrative in favor of a flux of ever-changing, frequently-shocking emotions. In short, it is a mad, even often-exhausting read – but it is frequently compelling in a “train-wreck-you-can’t-look-away-from” sort of way.

The moral compass in these novels is utterly bizarre. Adultery, deception, revenge – as long as the character can justify it as being for true love or against some greater evil, then it is perfectly okay. A heroine can be a big faker, engaging in all sorts of behavior that would in real life be considered to be completely dishonorable, but if she is doing it for love, then she is a pure, virtuous character. On the other hand, the selfish, greedy character who adheres to all of the proper rules and behavior of society is automatically evil. This is a deeply twisted form of morality, based entirely on feeling, or sentiment, rather than actions, which are the true test of anything. The result is a distorted funhouse mirror of ethics, where as long as you feel strongly enough about something, you can do whatever you like.

What I find most endearing of these novels is their villains. Oh so evil that they actually twirl mustaches and cackle with glee as they reveal their latest plan to gain more wealth or indulge in their basest desires. No excuse for their behavior is ever given. They are evil simply because the novel needs a conflict and they serve that purpose. They are always defeated in the most humiliating of circumstances. They lose all their money, their reputation is besmirched and they even lose their freedom in the closing chapters of the novel. This is the villain. They are the manifestation of the reader’s anger and frustration at the unfair circumstances of life. In a world where real life injustice is messy and largely unresolved, it is very satisfying to read of clearly defined good and evil and have the bad guy receive his “just desserts” in the most dramatic of circumstances. It is childish but it works on a very primitive level.

One reads a Mastram novel to experience a sequence of very strong and predictable emotions – anger at the villain, suspense during blackmail, excitement during a secret rendezvous and satisfaction at the happy ending. All this makes for an emotional massage. The brain can be turned off and the reader can sit back and enjoy the feeling. In this stressful world, this is therapeutic. Sometimes one doesn’t want a novel that reflects the problems of society. Sometimes all one wants is a novel that provides a perfect world where all problems are resolved within 120 pages of reading and where true love conquers all. Such novels are the literary equivalent of a warm blanket.

While Mastram is often referred to as a single book, it is actually a pseudonym for a large number of very cheap, erotic pulp novels published in North India in the 80s and 90s. While the plots of the individual books are repeatedly repeated, the basic structure is always that of a young, naive girl from a village, a corrupt landlord/stranger, lots of melodramatic plot and many build-ups to the sex scenes, described in very flowery and coded language to make as much as possible of the restricted nature of the publications. Most Mastram stories follow the basic pattern of a secret, forbidden affair which is swiftly followed by blackmail and then revenge of some kind or another. Much drama, sudden switch of emotion and character, and much over-the-top behavior is the stock-in-trade of this bizarre brand of popular culture. Melodrama and cliché are written into the very fabric of the novels, and the vast majority were read in secret by the author and by his readers, who passed the books from hand to hand in guilty, forbidden pleasure. Not exactly literature, but then again, they managed to carve out a unique and very distinct place in the culture.
