My Vampire System Audiobook

I’m basically a formalized version of an individual with strong moral grounds against the downloading of pirate copies of independently published content (including web novels). Such authors work for pennies and rely on reader support; ‘My Vampire System’ presumably is supported by its author through Patreon, ads, and/or platform subscription fees. Ripped audiobooks to be downloaded for free need to be avoided. Just because a story can be freely read in a web novel format does not mean that an audio version of that story should be downloaded for free. If one enjoys a web novel enough to look for an audio version of it, then that creator should be paid for that additional content. Buy it at a sale, borrow it from a library, or send the author a few bucks via Ko-fi even if all one can find is a free fan-dubbed audio version of the whole novel of interest. Sustainable creativity requires a sustainable audience.

I looked into the psychology of the “fast pass” system and it’s really cool how it can turn reading into a game in which you get a hit of dopamine not only from the story but also from unlocking the next chapter. In the case of My Vampire System, a story about a game-like system, the meta-layer is almost funny. By gamifying the consumption of a gamified story, the platform has created a sort of double game which can be enjoyed by the user who is able to see through it or it can be seen as manipulative and be resented by the user. I chose to lean into it and set little goals for myself to read in certain amounts and then I would reward myself with the next chapter of the story. The experience of reading My Vampire System was more engaging on another level because it was no longer just reading a story, I was participating in a structure that I had set up for myself. Not everyone will enjoy this but for those who do enjoy progression in games, they may find this aspect of the website to be strangely satisfying.

It’s hard to recommend any website that tries to sell you a full-length novel for free and does tons of ads. See if your local library has the novel on their apps like Libby or Hoopla. Translated novels can be purchased for libraries by the publisher for the novel as e-books. Even if the novel isn’t in your library, you might be able to check out the original novel from the author’s official site that has a free first chapter (note that many novels are hosted on sites with a hybrid model of free and paid content). You can always add the novel to your bookmarks on other reputable novel aggregators, and use an adblocker in the mean time.

Note that the romance subplot is handled rather differently in ‘Next Generation’ to how it was in the original. While the original had a slow-burn central romantic plotline, ‘Next Generation’ has a more ensemble cast and the relationships between the characters are spread throughout. While the romance is still there, it is for the most part more of a background plot and is often only revealed later in the story. The emotional core of the book is still there, but it’s based on different relationships and thus feels right for a book about a new generation growing up and forming their own relationships and bonds with each other. It will likely appeal to people who felt the original’s romance plotline was a distraction from the main story and vice versa.
