I’ve just come across a rather fun trope in the romance novels I’ve been reading lately: he is an alpha she doesn’t care about. In most of the romance novels I’ve read, the alpha male is the dominant, controlling figure of the novel who expects the heroine to be impressed by him. In these novels by and large the heroine falls for the hero despite his somewhat annoying traits. But here, the heroine just doesn’t care about his alpha status. In fact, she’ll frequently roll her eyes at his antics, call him out on his foolhardy behavior and just ignore him when he tries to be controlling. And the hero must work to win her attention and affection. It’s actually quite a fun dynamic to read and is often described as enemies to lovers with a rather playful twist.

It’s also really cool in terms of challenging gender roles. By having an alpha male not be the center of the story and having the heroine of a romance novel to be a really fully realized person in her own right and not be changed by the presence of an alpha male, that’s really cool. There are a lot of books out there that do this really well. For example, ‘The Hating Game’ by Sally Thorne. That book has a very alpha hero and the heroine is just so fully realized and she’s not impressed by this guy’s alpha traits at all. And in fact, the real romance in the book comes when he starts to earn her respect as opposed to her being told that he can have her respect. That’s just really, really cool. Another great example of this is ‘Bringing Down the Duke’ by Evelyn Jones. Again, a very brooding, very authoritative hero and a heroine who is just so busy being herself and doesn’t have time for this guy.

This phrase is funny because it is basically the romance novel version of reality check. The typical alpha male figure expects the heroine to revolve around him, to be his sun. But this heroine is not having it. She is not another goal for him to achieve, she has her own goals already. She may even think he is being a bit ridiculous in his alpha attempts. Or maybe she is just immune to his charms. Either way, it creates a great push and pull in the story, and shows that even the typical alpha male can have problems when the typical heroine is not falling all over him. And that the best romance novels are those in which both heroes and heroines grow. Confidence is sexy, but arrogance is not.
