I picked up He’s an Alpha: She doesn’t Care on the basis of mixed reviews. It’s a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. The basic setup is very straightforward: alpha male + woman who doesn’t care about him. Where this book really succeeds, for me, is in the heroine’s quotable sarcasm. Her caustic comments make her the rom-com-esque heroine / superhero who doesn’t get ruffled by the typical plot developments of her kind of book. Not great literature but a pleasant read for an afternoon.

When I picked up ‘He’s an Alpha: She doesn’t Care’ I was expecting a fairly standard romance read. There’s an alpha male, he’s got loads of women throwing themselves at him and he’s totalyum. But what makes this particular read refreshing is that the female lead isn’t some doormat of a heroine, nope, she’s a fierce and independent woman who doesn’t bat an eyelid at our alpha hero.

It’s mostly a character-driven novella, so there isn’t a lot of world-building or complex plot to get bogged down in. It’s a modern, breezy writing style, and it’s a very light read. So I’d say read it if you’re looking for something lighthearted and fun, with a bit of snark and some strong, lovable characters that are a bit different from the normal alpha romance fare.

I generally don’t get excited about romance novels because they all kind of read the same to me, but this one stood out because it’s kind of flipped on its head. This heroine doesn’t care about this alpha male’s typical alpha male-ness, which is just kind of funny and empowering. And their chemistry reads as slow-burn which is my preference, but some of the secondary characters aren’t fully developed.

The dialogue in this book is wonderful, each character sounds distinct and for the most part it reads really well, even in quieter scenes. It’s a really great rom-com-style story with a strong rebellious female lead, I’d definitely recommend it to fans of those kinds of stories. However, it’s not exactly a plot-driven story with lots of tension and drama, more of a character-focused, lighthearted read.

The banter in this book was absolutely phenomenal – it was like reading a really, really funny and intense game of verbal tennis with two amazing opponents, each equally as fabulous as the other. The heroine is this wonderful, aloof, Indifferent person. I loved her – she was so true to herself and her mannerism was obviously thoroughly woven into her personality. This book had some very convenient plot points, but it was just so charming that I was willing to overlook them. A perfect read for a lazy weekend.

This book is kind of awesome when read as a deconstruction of the Alpha male fantasy. The Alpha’s (sort of) attempts to win over this one woman who doesn’t care about his status ultimately forces him to realize just how empty his life of status has been. That’s pretty deep for a book that’s largely just a romantic trope – and it’s not necessarily an intentional critique of performative masculinity, just a sort of side effect of its examination of a single aspect of it. Anyway, it’s a weirdly compelling read, even if the rest of the book is pretty standard romance fare, with some pretty textbook romance scenes. But that subtext is really interesting, and ultimately more compelling than the surface-level storyline of this book.

Honestly? I got maybe 5 pages into this thing, and within that 5 pages, I would have already known that the author would refer to ‘dominant pheromones’ about 3 times within the 5 pages, and I’d have had to put the thing down already. It’s just that my time is precious, and I have so many other books that I could be reading, that have been highly recommended by people I trust. And this one just smelled of another ‘same old’ book that I would have put down within those first 5 pages had I known. Maybe I was a bit unfair, but my first impression was that the author was using far too many words to describe something simple, and was consequently repeating himself ad nauseum within a very short space of time. As a result, I have not read enough to be able to give this a fair review, but my initial gut feeling has been so strong, that I’m not going to bother to continue reading this in the future. If you like this sort of thing, then more power to you!

Older readers of romance are used to reading bodice rippers or early paranormal novels with strong heroine-centered plots, while many newer readers of romance are coming to the genre through BookTok and thus expect novels with heroines who are consistently aggressive, hot, and emotionally complex. This novel is a transitional work that is not quite old enough to be retro enough for some older readers, nor is it new enough to be bold or innovative enough for some of the newer romance readers. Does the author write any other stories? Are they a debut writer? Even if they aren’t, every writer starts somewhere. If the author has written a portfolio of trope-driven stories that their audience loves, then this will read exactly like they expect. I haven’t gone and checked out the author’s other works, but from reading this story, it’s clear that they have a solid grasp of the various conventions of the story, and are writing it within those strictures. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good read – rather, that it’s a solid example of this type of story. And for some readers, that’s the highest praise of all.
