‘Winterfrost’ by Michelle Houts is a lovely middle-grade novel infused with Danish folklore. After her parents are called away unexpectedly, a girl named Bettina accidentally forgets to leave the traditional Christmas porridge for the nisse (household spirits). This slight causes a chain of magical trouble, and Bettina must venture into a hidden world to set things right.

The wintry Danish setting is wonderfully evoked, and the mythology feels fresh and enchanting. It’s an adventure story with high stakes for the protagonist, but it’s grounded in family, tradition, and making amends. It’s perfect for kids who love a bit of fantasy with their holiday reading.

For a laugh-out-loud option, 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas!' is the obvious choice, but it’s obvious for a reason. The rhyme and rhythm are infectious, the illustrations are iconic, and the message about Christmas coming without ribbons, tags, packages, boxes, or bags is timeless. It’s a quick read, but it’s so much fun to perform with different voices.

I think every kid (and adult) needs to be reminded that the holiday can feel overwhelming and commercial, but its heart is something much simpler and more communal. Seeing the Grinch’s small heart grow three sizes gets me every time.

‘The Christmas Boot’ by Lisa Wheeler is a sweet, original folk tale. A lonely old woman finds one magical boot that grants wishes. She uses it to make her humble life cozy. When its owner, a right jolly old elf, comes looking for it, he’s so touched by her goodness that he lets her keep it. The story has a wonderful, old-world feel with a kind-hearted Santa figure.

The illustrations by Jerry Pinkney (again!) are gorgeous, full of texture and winter light. It’s a story about kindness being rewarded, and about finding companionship in unexpected ways. It feels like a classic tale that’s been around for a hundred years, which is the highest compliment.

Which new Christmas books are ideal for children’s holiday reading?

The new 'Jolly Jingle-Jumble' is less a story and more a tactile experience for babies and young toddlers. It has different textured elements on every page—a fuzzy Santa hat, a shiny present wrapper, a crinkly stocking. The colors are high-contrast black, white, and red for developing vision. There’s a subtle jingle bell sewn safely into the spine that rings when you shake the book. It’s purely about sensory exploration. The 'story' is just simple labels for the textures and items. For its intended audience of 6 months to 2 years, it’s perfect—durable, engaging, and introducing the holiday visuals in a safe, chewable format. A great first Christmas book.

If your club likes mystery but wants warmth, the 'Number 1 Ladies' Detective Agency' series is perfect. Set in Botswana, the mysteries are gentle, and the heart of the books is Mma Ramotswe's traditional wisdom, kindness, and love for her country. The pacing is slow and contemplative, like having a cup of bush tea with a friend. It’s a unique window into a culture that values quiet dignity and solving problems through understanding.

I’m a huge fan of ‘The Secret Garden’ for this vibe. The gradual awakening of both the garden and the children is a perfect metaphor for the return of light and warmth. The Yorkshire setting is bleak initially, but that makes the discovery of life and color so much more powerful. It’s a story about the healing power of nature, friendship, and fresh air. It feels like a restorative, wholesome breath.

What are the coziest family novels to read at Christmas?

Don't forget cookbooks with stories! ‘A Christmas Story’ by Brian Glover is a nice mix. It follows a fictional family through December, with recipes for each event—baking day, Christmas Eve supper, the main feast. The narrative ties the recipes together into a cohesive, cozy story. Reading it feels like peeking into someone’s cherished family traditions. You get the double whammy: a comforting narrative and the promise of delicious food to make. It engages more senses than a standard novel.
