It’s used diegetically throughout the movie and viewers can clearly hear it on radios and in various backgrounds in many scenes. This is different from the typical situation where a song is used over a montage of shots of a character. The use of this song in Cocktail is not just as background music to scenes, it is part of the diegesis, or the world in which the characters exist. As a result, the movie conveys the fact that the song’s philosophy is part of the culture that the characters are living in and that they are dealing with. This is a small difference from typical use of songs in films, but it is a difference that makes a large difference in terms of conveying realism in an otherwise very realistic movie. The song is not commenting on the action from outside the action, it is part of the action.

I’ve always been one to look for the reasoning behind the choices of locations for films. The film The Fallen, for example, shot in Jordan where the locations provided an idealized version of the past; a lost, great civilization, that existed in a very harsh and beautiful land. The Czech locations, on the other hand, represented the very corrupt and complicated present of all politics and shadows and decaying institutions. The geographical narrative was without a doubt a huge factor in the film feeling as cohesive as it does thematically. The locations weren’t just chosen because they were pretty, they were chosen to further reinforce the storyline of the film. The heat haze in the desert and the chill fog in the Bohemian woods are not just weather conditions, they also symbolize emotions that the actors had to really experience for themselves and not just pretend to in front of a fan with a green screen behind them.

A pretty apt location for a movie about the last people on Earth was the New Zealand South Island for ‘Z for Zachariah’. Primarily shot in the Otago region, locations in and around Queenstown, Glenorchy and the Dart River were used to bring the sheltered and lush farm, and then imposing barren environment to life. A farm set was built for the movie and shot on location at the respective locations to meet the story requirements of the movie. Of course, the other big benefit of shooting in New Zealand is the huge amount of production support, plus the fact that the film is eligible for those famous NZ filming incentives. But, artistically speaking, choosing to shoot ‘Z for Zachariah’ in New Zealand’s South Island was a great choice. The location is a main character, and it does a lot of the storytelling. The silence of those mountains, and the clear river, really add to the mood of the film and the fragile survival of the remaining humans on Earth.

I’m going to be contrarian here and say that I knew the film was shot in Georgia, and that took me out of the film a little bit. I think that it was a budget decision and not an artistic choice. Because this film is set in a very specific cultural world—the Australian elite swimming system, the suburban world of competition swimming—the film really needs to be shot on location to really create that world. Otherwise it’s just going to feel like a film about baseball shot in Texas when it’s really a film about baseball in Cuba. They pulled it off well in terms of the acting and writing, but I do think that a little bit of authenticity was left behind in Australia and shot in Georgia instead.

When one visits the locations today they will probably notice differences – for example the new interior of the Ahwahnee at Yosemite, or the changes in the vineyard plantings at the various wineries. But in the film these locations have been fixated in time as they were at the turn of the century. Thus the ‘where’ of the film is also a ‘when’, and a visit to these wonderful locations today will provide a contrast to how they were when the story was being shot for the film some 15 years or so ago.
