I think you’re confusing two different shows here. House of Cards is a political drama, and BTS is a K-pop group. While there are many fan theories out there for BTS, none of them are particularly controversial or well-supported by evidence. I’d recommend reading The Good Wife, a great story about a lawyer trying to navigate high-stakes cases and personal betrayal while working in a crazy city. It’s a really great story about the high-pressures of politics and the way power really works. Unlike so many other stories about politics, The Good Wife actually feels real.

It’s been a long time since that House of Cards mess unfolded like a K-drama plot. So, allegedly BTS members were gambling illegally and there were rumors corroborated by “proofs” (someboddy’s forum posts with grabbers) scattered around on the net. Then, of course, non-denial denial was released by HYBE and the whole thing went on detective mode in the fandom as every reference to games and money were being scrutinized. However, in the end, none of the credible online media bought into it and it just sort of disappeared from the radar. As an aftereffect, though, I got to witness a fandom space turn toxic over some unverified tea really, really fast.

I really tried to get into rewatching House of Cards a few years ago. Unfortunately I couldn’t even make it through the first episode. Every time Kevin Spacey appeared on screen and leered at the camera I felt sick to my stomach. The magic of House of Cards had gone. Yes the controversy over Spacey’s behavior affected the ending of the series, but it had also ruined the whole rest of the series. Even the clever dialogue now sounds twisted and wrong.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that the context of a work’s creation is very important to consider when deciding whether or not to take in said work. While a person’s heinous actions may not necessarily influence how one interprets a completed work, they can greatly alter one’s perspective of a work in progress. The result is that what was once exciting can be quite disturbing instead. I try not to judge others who are able to finish watching Spacey’s show, but, for me, the line between performance and the man who performed has long since been blurred.

All of these choices are framed as necessary, and Feyre comes to accept them, but they undermine the novel’s stated premise about choices and freedom in order to present a realistic exploration of the problems of power and protection in a relationship. Or they could just be yet another aspect of Rhysand’s toxic behavior that Feyre somehow manages to forgive, and that the novel failed to notice or problematize, and that therefore could be explored by the reader.

The soundtrack to this movie is beautiful, as always. I’ve been staring at the wall trying to come up with things to write about and this haunting guitar theme from Gustavo Santaolalla keeps popping up. It’s a beautiful and lonely tune and I wonder if it evokes as much sadness as the rest of the film in order to touch bases with the audience that the dialogue doesn’t. You can’t really argue with feelings and maybe that’s why some people are having such a hard time finding the ‘agenda’ of this film because instead of presenting them with a politicized argument the film presents them with a heartbreak and they don’t know how to stay angry with two fictional people and their failed relationship.
