How Does Ichigo Use Mugetsu In Bleach?

This is Ichigo at his absolute best. He has put his whole training into Mugetsu – every moment with Isshin, the ridiculous risk he’s taken to use it. The transformation scene is great as always. Who wouldn’t want to see Ichigo, his white hair wild, a tattered black cloak around his shoulders, burning with a grim look in his eyes. His attack, simple as a slash, carries a weight far greater than any Bankai. The agonizing scene that follows is also intense, however. Here we have a man of unyielding strength, and he’s been rendered powerless. We can see that he’s lost. It’s this duality that makes ‘Bleach’ so very special.

Mugetsu is the arc that really cements in my mind the ‘all or nothing’ vibe that Character points out in this week’s discussion. The final Getsuga Tenshou that Ichigo uses to destroy Aizen is not just a large amount of power – it’s symbolic as well. Ichigo literally becomes a blade in this scene, becoming one with Zangetsu. And the mechanics behind it are really cool too. In order to use the final Getsuga Tenshou, Ichigo would have to absorb all of his remaining spiritual energy. It’s like burning out a fuse at its maximum brightness.

But what Kubo does with the consequences of that power-up is far more complex and interesting than typical shonen. Mugetsu allows Ichigo to repay a great debt and go on to greater things. And after that, he loses his powers for good. So it’s not just a victory – it’s a reckoning. And I love that after so much pomp and circumstance from Aizen in the lead-up to the fight, he gets monologued down and then chopped down by Ichigo in a flash of 거래 action with none of the expectation or fanfare that such a dramatic development would warrant. That’s storytelling at its very finest – Mugetsu isn’t just a move.

One of the many “final” moves within the Bleach series is without a doubt the amazing Mugetsu move unleashed by Ichigo Kurosaki in his final Getsuga Tensho form, incorporating his Zanpakuto into the very attack itself. The transformation into the final Getsuga Tensho form is exceptional: Ichigo’s hair turns completely white, and his Shinigami attire is modified into an utterly cool black and red outfit. When he uses Mugetsu, Ichigo’s entire spiritual energy is completely channeled into one singular motion – a slash of insane power that completely annihilates whatever is in his path. The Aftermath leaves Ichigo without any of the abilities typical of a Shinigami, making for a heart-wrenching scene.

I love the emotional lead up to this move. The reason that Ichigo goes for this last-resort technique is because he knows how much it’s going to cost him. And so this move is not just a technique, it’s a sacrifice. The way the manga frames this moment is also really beautiful. There’s a lot of silence in between the panels, and there’s a lot of contrast in between the black and white. It makes it feel like time has just stopped. And Mugetsu is not a move that’s all about show. It’s a narrative exclamation point, as a culmination of Ichigo’s desperation and growth. Even now, watching it rewatched gives me chills.
