The confrontation in the end solved all the conflicts in the story, and in the epilogue, we see the characters slowly get back to an intimate relationship after all the stress. It was really realistic because not everything gets fixed in the end, but there is growth and hope. It left me with a happy and strange feeling of satisfaction, like finishing a very long ride with friends.

So I read the bulk of the story quite quickly in the end, and it was really interesting to see how the story had developed, particularly the romantic elements, the biker club politics, and how the various ‘bully to obsessor’ storylines reached their conclusions. What I found most surprising was that the actual resolution of the various plot threads was actually quite quiet and personal in terms of the characters. And what I mean by that is instead of drawing out the story in endless cliffhangers, the author gives each character what they deserve in terms of closure. Then in the epilogue we get to see them all a few months down the line. It was great to see how the characters had moved on and how they had rebuilt their friendships and got into new routines. It's a really satisfying way to end a series, it made me smile and sigh in equal measure.

This is not a nihilistic or (unfortunately) “tragic” story in the worst sense of those terms. Yes, it does go to some very dark places, but it does so in order to find hope, and to celebrate human connection in the midst of pain. And – crucially – every scene of pain has a scene of healing to come. So while the ending of the story is in doubt for much of the time, in the end things are going to be okay. The writers are taking good care of their characters and their audience.
You will feel taken care of by the writers in the end. That means there is potential for tears but also for healing. The story is a safe emotional investment. I have recommended this to friends who do not read sad stories. Even they agreed that the end was worth the painful journey along the way. It is a complete and very satisfying story.

Honestly? This is a divisive book. After so much intense and thrilling cat-and-mouse games between our hero and villain, it does not end with them in love. It does not even end with them together. The end of the story is that the villain wins in some way, specifically that they reject the entire game of hero and villain. They use the hero’s greatest weakness (their obsessive nature) to expose the hero to the public and bring down their authority. We last see the villain on a train, looking out at the unfamiliar scenery of another place, shadowless. It’s a bittersweet but very much open-ended ending. It’s not about them. It’s about him/her. And it’s very freeing. I didn’t want more from this book. I thought that was the perfect ending to it. Many others will disagree with me, though.

I have to admit, I kind of skimmed the last few chapters of the book because it was getting to be so tense and I needed to be able to read it after my heart rate returned to normal. Re-reading everything after I had calmed down was really interesting because I was able to pick up on so many little things that I had missed the first time. The look Sunny gave Red, the way Maddy was holding her dead phone, the exact words that Dobbs had confessed with… it was all just so phenomenal. The first time through the book was for panic, the second time through was for heartbreak. The author did such a great job with the last few chapters of the book. Every line served a purpose of advancing the story and character’s tragedy.

I can only try to remind you of the major character deaths in the ending of the novel. There were none, to my recollection. I seem to recall a somewhat sad, somewhat heroic, aged and tragic figure making a sort of sacrificial death – a sort of ancestral spirit finally at peace – but no main characters or even crucial secondary characters die in the novel. Rather, they all experience a sense of long-overdue emotional liberation from all the pain and suffering they had endured for so very long. The novel’s ending is a feeling of relief and joy, as opposed to sadness and grief. So, if you’re one of these individuals who can’t stand endings that are sad, then rest assured – this is not the novel for you.

The male voice chosen for Bradford in the audiobook's finale is incredible. So incredible in fact that the emotional speech he gave had me in tears when he got slightly choked up in his throat while speaking and it had me pulled over to the side of the road in shock. What could have been a cheesy line or two read out loud in a dramatic fashion was actually pulled off beautifully with genuine emotion. The end of The School for Good and Evil was "ok" for me, but the audio version is an entirely different and far better experience. He needs an award for selling the ending of this book.

I updated the Last Update page for Chapter 47, and in the author’s blog they outlined that he is targeting a total of 60ish chapters for the story. The pacing has been increasing lately with less focus on romance and more on the impending apocalypse, which I think will get to a good climax. The author has also been incorporating a lot of folklore into the story, and recently there was a big chunk of Hungarian demon mythology that I had to research further. There’s no word on a completion date, but it always causes a lot of excitement in the comments as fans try to guess when the next part will come out.

I stopped reading around Chapter 40. I don't know if I could have handled more. The writing is very good, but the tension was starting to give me anxiety. It was making me anxious because of how hopeless and claustrophobic Penelope's situation was and how many terrible men were surrounding her. I needed to step away for my own sanity.
From what I gather from fellow readers who have finished the story, it is roughly 100 chapters long and the payoff is good for the protagonist as she gains agency. I am still hesitant to return to this story though as it gave me anxiety reading the ~40 chapters that I did finish. This number of 100 chapters that I have gathered from discussion spaces is the number that rings most true to me.
