This is one of those series where the fandom will unanimously point you to Book 1. There's no contested 'chronological order' debate like with some other franchises. The timeline is the publication order. Grab 'The Angel Experiment,' settle in, and get ready for a fast-paced, flying ride.

I appreciate that Patterson kept it simple. No messing with the timeline across the main series. Book one is first, book two is next, and so on. It's refreshing in an era where every franchise has prequels, interquels, and midquels. Here, you can just read the numbers on the spines.

My two cents: start with book one. The series evolves tonally, and if you jump into, say, the third book first, you'll miss the gradual shift from survival story to a more mission-oriented plot. The timeline's progression is part of the experience. Watching the kids grow up and the stakes change is key.

A practical tip: libraries often have the whole series. Look for the one with the bird-wing logo and the number 1. That's 'The Angel Experiment.' The story timeline is linear, so you won't need a guide or wiki to understand where to begin. It's as user-friendly as series get.

She was never meant to survive their world.
Now she’s the only one who can burn it down.
Lyra thought she was just a girl with strange dreams and a birthmark that shimmered beneath moonlight. But when a celestial event rips her from Earth and drops her into the brutal halls of the Academy of the Ascendant, she discovers a deadly truth: she’s the lost heir of a realm that erased her bloodline—and she’s carrying the forbidden magic that could unravel it all.
The Academy is ruled by power and hierarchy. The weak are crushed. The strong ascend. And the Triad—three elite heirs born of elemental fire, storm, and air—will do anything to break her. Until they realize she’s more powerful than all of them.
Mocked. Hunted. Desired.
As Lyra unlocks the four elemental affinities no student should possess, she becomes the center of a prophecy that the Council has killed to keep buried. But it’s the fifth element—the forbidden Void—that marks her for something more.
Survival means mastering her magic.
Love could cost her everything.
And rebellion might just start with a kiss.
Perfect for fans of Zodiac Academy, Throne of Glass, and The Cruel Prince, Marked by Starlight is the explosive first book in a dark fantasy romance series filled with elemental magic, enemies-to-lovers heat, and a heroine who refuses to bow.
She was an Elemental. He was Human. There was a Witch Hunt.

Blue Thunder’s legend goes deep enough that a trilogy won’t be enough to cover it.
In book 1, Follow Coralis Golmar, aka Blue Thunder, as she learns who she is while many people want her dead.
What will she be willing to do to protect her loved ones?
Ultimately, it fits where you first encountered it. For me, it was 2007, in a school book fair. That's its place in my timeline. For Patterson, it's a business decision he made in 2005 that paid off for years. For the characters, it's a few turbulent years of their lives. The 'overall timeline' is just a construct. The series exists in all these dimensions at once—personal, commercial, and fictional. Trying to pin it to a single point on a line misses the point. It's a phenomenon that spanned years and touched different people in different ways.
The manga is a separate beast. It adapts the first story arc (roughly books 1-3) but with artistic license and a different ending. Do not mix the manga volumes into the novel reading order. Enjoy it as a parallel adaptation after you've finished the original novel series.
I'm seeing a lot of order lists, but not much on why the order matters. Reading 'Fang' before 'MAX' would spoil a major departure. Reading 'Angel' out of sequence would make the schism in the flock incomprehensible. The order isn't just arbitrary; each book directly reacts to the cliffhanger of the previous one, especially from book 5 onward. It's a very serialized story after the first trilogy. Skipping around isn't really an option if you want to follow the emotional through-lines, as messy as they get.
