Once upon a time, Sethbe, the son of a spirit god, had an affair with Mathilda, a Light Priestess, which resulted in a child. War was raging between the children of the gods: between those of darkness and those of light. Sethbe and his brothers, Liedte and Zienkhe, were overseers in the darkness. They could not have people know about the child. Mirrhia, a loyal servant of the brothers, took the child and disappeared before anyone realized birth happened.
She made a quick stop to the family temple in the middle of the Egyptian desert, to present the child officially to Ghar, the brothers’ creator, protected by the watchful eyes of the temple guardians. With the baby tucked in her arms, she then left into the night, without a trace.August 8, 1980 Anita picked up Coralis in her arms and climbed up the stairs to take her to bed. In her eyes, Coralis was the best thing that ever happened to her, better than the night she accepted Donny as her husband and mate. She dropped her in her small crib and took a minute to admire her beautiful week-old daughter, then left the room. She had to get ready for the meeting with Lord Meozo. Anita and Donny flew back from Egypt the day before. They wanted to stay there longer, but they couldn’t: it was time to come back home. Anita pregnancy was over, so she would be able to fight if needed. During the day, Anita took care of registering Coralis’ birth to the humans. With a human birth certificate, she was hoping that Coralis would be able to live a normal life, just in case something happens to them. Coralis wasn’t truly her birth name, but she needed everyone to believe it was. Her friend Dorothy was waiting for her in the living room when she got back down to the main floor. “Oh, you’re here already! I didn’t hear you coming in,” she said to her friend. “Of course, you wouldn’t, you were probably fawning over Coralis again when I got in. Note, I don’t blame you, that girl is so cute, I would also have done the same without caring about anything else. Did you ward her room?” “Yes, but just a basic one so Lord Meozo wouldn’t sense her. I don’t want him to know that she’s here.” “He will ask questions and you know it. He knew you were pregnant last time he saw you. If you try to tell him that you lost the baby, he will kill you for lying to him and all the wards protecting Coralis will dissolve the moment you die. Heck, he probably already knows her birth name!” “I will do whatever I can to keep her away from him. It’s bad enough that Donny and I couldn’t stay away, I do not want her involved in our mess.” The women walked to the basement door and went down to join the others. Lord Meozo was there already. Even if he was trapped within a summoning circle, Anita shivered when she saw him and struggled to keep her hands from trembling. She was hoping that she wouldn’t be forced to bring Coralis to him. “Ahhhh Anita, my dear. It’s been a long time! How are you doing? I heard you and Donny couldn’t have produced a sweeter looking baby,” said Lord Meozo. “Hmm I’m good,” Anita said, giving a furtive look to her husband, who was standing across the room right next to the summoning circle. “Exhausted, but good.” She didn’t want to talk to Lord Meozo about her daughter. If he asked questions, she was planning to avoid answering by changing subject and wasn’t above flirting with him. As much as she despised him, he was still their boss and they needed to stay alive. “When am I going to have the pleasure to meet little Corhaaliniakhys?” Anita tried to remain calm and took a deep breath. “We got more pressing matters to address. My daughter is asleep, this is not a place for an infant,” Donny answered before Anita could even think of how to answer the question. Donny did not like hearing his daughter birth name rolling out of Lord Meozo’s mouth. They thought they had been careful. If he knew his daughter birth name, it meant one of two things, and neither were good. Either he managed to extract the information from one of the witnesses who were in Egypt with them when they presented their child to their god, or his connections with high ranked demons were deeper than he thought. He didn’t exclude the possibility that Lord Meozo could also be working for a god. He was deep in thoughts when the meeting started. He wasn’t paying attention to what was being said and abruptly got pulled out of his train of thoughts by the sounds of a commotion coming from the main floor. His mind went to Coralis instantly. He looked at his wife, who was running for the stairs. Before she could reach the landing, a dozen of agents wearing different uniforms erupted in the room, pushing everyone against the wall across the stairs. Their basement meeting room was in chaos. Donny saw Dorothy standing in a corner away from them, staring at Lord Meozo, then realized that he couldn’t dissipate to leave the room: he was trapped in the summoning circle. He didn’t know how the authorities found out about this meeting, but he quickly figured that Dorothy was behind it and was the one trying to keep Lord Meozo in this room. The Canadian Ministry of Mythical Affairs and the European Bureau of Elemental Energy had been working together for years to destroy Lord Meozo and dismantle his operation. They raided a lot of their meetings for the past few months, destroying countless supporters and followers, but they could never catch Lord Meozo. Finally, they were going to end this. It only took them a few minutes to destroy everyone in the room, including Lord Meozo. They were all dead and in ashes, except Dorothy. Before they left, she told them of a baby girl sleeping upstairs. The girl was the Golmars’ daughter: she had to be hidden. Dorothy felt guilty for causing Anita and Donny’s deaths. She tried to spare them from being killed and was convinced she didn’t do enough. She also knew that there was a lot of people who would likely come after her, so she couldn’t take the girl. Going against the couple wishes in case something was to happen to them, she requested that her guardianship to Coralis was dissolved. That night, another gathering of followers had been raided. One of Anita’s brothers was destroyed there, along with his wife. Agents found their 2-month-old daughter Nadilla sleeping in another room. The rest of Anita’s family was also under suspicion and Donny’s family could not be located, so it was decided that Coralis and her cousin Nadilla would be placed in the human system, until they were of age to start elemental school.March 27, 2004 – 15:45Coralis grabbed her shoes, slid her arm around Kief’s elbow and let him lead her toward the elevators then to the limousine waiting for them.“Ahhh Blue Thunder! You have no idea how honoured I am to be the one driving you to your wedding.”“Petaan! It’s a good surprise to see you as my driver.”“You got three CMMA elders attending your wedding,” said Petaan as he drove to the church, “believe it or not, you are writing history today.”“I probably will never understand why. I am not the first elemental being to marry a human, and I’m sure I won’t be the last. High Mage Finnas said that High Fay Ellya and High Elf Yalor were attending to discourage anyone from trying anything.”“It’s a sign of the times we’re in and a clear indication of what you’ve become,” said Kief.“Sebastian did the same thing 3 months ago,” said Coralis as she put her shoes on.“Like you, Sebastian Larameer has made a name for himself in the flyball circuit and he is well-known, but you kno
March 27, 2004 – noonCoralis sat on the table, her elbows on her knees, her hands holding her forehead. Her head was spinning and her mind was numb. She hadn’t slept all night and was still hammered from a night of drinking. Victoria, Stephanie, Maribel, Eva and Veronica took her out for drinks the previous night after her flyball game, arguing that if she was to blend in and pass for a human, she needed to go through a bachelorette party. She could hear her friends snoring across her bridal suite, repeatedly hitting the snooze button on their alarm. The wedding was scheduled for 16:00, so they still had some time. She considered going for another shower, even if she still had her towel wrapped around her, but a loud knock on the door startled her.She jumped off the table, tied the towel again around her and headed to the door. From the corner of her eyes, she saw Eva and Veronica sitting up.“Good morning!” said Molly as she walked in, followed by Lizzy.Lizzy was carrying a large
March 13, 2004“Prince Nuuka and his family will be at your wedding? Damn, okay, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised to hear that many dignitaries of our kind are going to attend. Everyone loves flyball… but I think her name is now bigger than the game,” said Victoria.“When was the last time you talked to her?” said Frank.Coralis and Sebastian were playing in Ethiopia that night. Victoria and Stephanie came to Frank’s apartment to watch the game, and Samantha and Jeremie attentively watched it.“Hmm right after the new year, why? Who else is coming?”“Did she tell you who’ll be singing at their wedding?” said Stephanie.“No. The last time I talked to her, she talked about yours and asked me questions about the part where your mom walked you down the aisle.”“Is it what she worries about? Because lately… I don’t know, she seems distant and barely talks to me,” said Frank.Victoria looked at him, and she became worried about Coralis. She knew, however, that it probably wasn’t for the sam
January 9, 2004“So this is what a folks arena looks like,” said Coralis, standing in front of a downtown building. “It’s like an indoor stadium, right?”Stephanie laughed.“You’ve never been to a concert before?”“It’s not like I ever had the time to do anything that normal people do. There have been a few concerts that your brother wanted to take me to, but I always was in the middle of some mess somewhere, so he’d go with Mark instead.”“What about when you were a teenager?” said Stephanie as they got in line. “I know you went to a boarding school, but you didn’t stay there for the summer.”“I was either in group homes or staying at Erik’s and Henry’s house. Victoria wanted to go to one once when we were 13, but I couldn’t get permission from the head administrator.”Stephanie looked at her friend. She forgot a moment that Coralis didn’t have a normal childhood. The heavy rock band The Moonlight Hammer was in town. Frank was covering the event and had been able to get parterre tick
January 4, 2004 – 16:00“I remember Dad telling Donny and Robbie, our older brother,” said Dawn, still unmoving. “But he never told them why.”She opened her eyes back up and stared at Coralis.“You look so much like Dad, it’s not funny. He never spoke of his family god and always worshipped our mom’s one. I’m a water mage, just like our mother and the name Golmar is from her bloodline. It’s the surname of a water mage bloodline. He never told us why he refused to acknowledge his family god and insisted that my brothers practice water magic.”“Really?” said Coralis, looking at her aunt in disbelief.“Yes,” said Dawn, returning to sit next to Coralis. “Donny always thought he was a wind mage. He found out that he was a spirit mage from Lord Meozo. When he went into hiding in his family temple with your mother, he hoped he could learn about his true family god. When I met them there for your introduction to the gods, he didn’t tell me if he found out.”“Maybe it’s just me being ignorant
January 4, 2004 – 15:00Coralis got out of the taxi and looked at the house standing in front of her. Frank wanted to come, but he had an event to cover and couldn’t find a replacement. Part of her didn’t want to be there and wanted to call a taxi to go back home, but she knew she couldn’t. It was time for her to meet Dawn, her dad’s sister. She took a deep breath and walked to the door, hoping it wouldn’t get emotional, not like it did when she met with Dorothy for the first time. She rang the doorbell. No answer. She rang it again, thinking that if she had to ring it a third time, she would leave.A few minutes later, a small woman opened the door. She looked like her, but shorter. Coralis wanted to remove her binds to see if it was true that her aunt lost all of her elemental powers, but decided against it, especially not in the open like that. She could only hope that she was walking into friendly territory, that she didn’t have a foe waiting for her behind the door.“I wish I cou
January 1, 2004Coralis sat in a church between Frank and Audrey, listening to the pastor perform the wedding ceremony. Part of her wanted to sit next to her flyball team members, who sat near the back of the church on the groom’s side, or next to Erik and Henry, who sat behind her team, but she knew that her place was on the bride’s side, with the family who was also about to become hers. She didn’t want to think about her own upcoming wedding and was happy that this day was all about Sebastian and Stephanie. She was merely there as a witness and spectator. She wanted to forget about everything else, and merely be a woman watching her friends getting married, but she couldn’t stop herself from worrying about what could happen. She knew that High Mage Finnas was sitting at the back of the church, but she didn’t want to look in his direction so it wouldn’t raise suspicions. Thankfully, the majority of the people in attendance knew about the supernatural. Stephanie’s coworkers were werew
December 24, 2003 – 19:00“Sally has been killed?” said Sebastian.Samantha nodded and answered Linda’s question. Frank looked at his sister. He knew she was also worried. The doorbell rang and he jumped. Louis went upstairs to answer, followed by Lizzy.“Congratulations!” said Louis as he let Coralis and Audrey in. “We saw on the news. The UK is no longer hunting you down.”“And no longer stuck on house arrest in London,” said Lizzy as she hugged her daughter.“I told you so!” said Sebastian as Coralis walked down the stairs to meet with the others.“Don’t get too comfortable, we’ll be moving to the kitchen to eat,” said Linda as Coralis gave a confused look to Sebastian.Sebastian told her the discussion they had before she and Audrey arrived as Frank led her to the kitchen, his hand on her lower back.“By the way, Sebastian, Emery is now a wanted witch. He was 49th when I checked the lists after talking to MI6.“Frank mentioned something about names when I started calling you Blue,
December 24, 2003 – 16:30Louis handed Frank a drink after Linda collected their winter coats.“I remember that night she took down your former leader. I heard a lot about him, but nothing good,” said Stephanie.“Took down former leader? Is it the duel you mentioned last year when we were trying to get Audrey back?” said Louis, looking at Stephanie.Stephanie nodded to her uncle.“Frank us that you’re close to Coralis, are you like her?” said Molly.“Coralis? Ah yes, I keep forgetting she’s known under a different name. I’m not exactly like her. I’m a werepanther, a different type of lycanthrope,” said Samantha, following Frank to the basement.“I remember seeing her transforming into a panther the night she killed Dwayne,” said Lizzy.“Some mages learn to transform into an animal of their choice. Blue can transform into a black panther,” said Sebastian, leaning on the chair Stephanie sat on.“She looked like a black cat when she came back from that house with that Veronica girl,” sai
