Who Does 'Keeping 13' End Up With In The Final Chapter?

No spoilers beyond the finale, but my heart's torn between rooting for Team Johnny or Team Gianna after that cliffhanger. Which couple truly gets their happily ever after in the epilogue?

I read ‘Keeping 13’ as part of Chloe Walsh’s ‘Binding 13’ series. The main characters throughout the story were Johnny Kavanagh and Shannon Lynch and this book ended their story in a very satisfying way to readers. However, their is another dramatic, character-driven romance that has a very definite ending to it and that is ‘The War of the Royals: The Alpha's Rose Conclusion’. The story follows a fated-mate fantasy saga where an epic battle takes place to determine who will have the power to rule over others, and in the end the two main characters come together to form a powerful bond after all they have been through, and you can read this web novel on several different sites to binge read.

The ending was so perfect for Shannon and Johnny’s character development in this story. They weren’t exactly a romantic couple throughout the story, but they are two broken people who somehow manage to trust each other. I loved the last chapter of the story where Shannon was in the hospital because of a rugby injury, and Johnny just showed up in the waiting room.

What is brilliant about this ending is that it leaves things to the reader’s imagination and doesn’t spell everything out for them. Thus, we see Johnny wearing a hair tie around his wrist – Shannon’s. We hear Shannon’s mom say hello to Johnny for the first time. And even Aoife gets a word in edgewise, a ‘Told you so’ to Johnny of which we can only guess the context. The last paragraph of the book shows us Shannon waking up from sleep to find Johnny lying asleep in a chair with her on his lap and her in his. His rugby playbook is open on her lap. It’s perfect.

Let’s get into the Shannon/Johhny finale and how it subverts most typical YA resolutions to the protagonists in love. Instead of taking Shannon to the prom and confessing his love to her, the writer has the climax of Shannon and Johnny’s story take place amidst utter mundane chaos: Shannon’s brother’s wedding. Shannon has Johnny help her straighten his tie. Their fingers touch. It looks like live wires could touch and then they wouldn’t. Shannon is wearing green. Johnny is wearing gray. And there are wedding rings in this scene. Beneath the pretense of pretending to care about Shannon’s brother, Shannon and Johnny are committing to each other.

But then again, there is the depth of the last line of the story and the connection of ‘Soon’ to the first break up between Shannon and Johnny and ‘Not Yet’. It’s a promise made between two people who have found comfort in each other and how they share Shannon’s rituals for coping with anxiety – like silently tapping 13 on her wrist. For another look at Shannon and Johnny, read ‘Saving 6’ from Joey’s perspective.

Just finished reading ‘Keeping 13’ by Jeremy Robert Johnson last night and the ending was completely unexpected and brilliant. As Shannon had gone on a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the novel she was left with Johnny in the end. It wasn’t some496 romantic finale of them sharing a passionate kiss as the sun dipped below the horizon. No, instead the two reunited in bitter, apologetic awkwness with Johnny’s bandaged up hand clenched into a fist around a hospital wristband. It was very real and he’s by no means a reformed ‘bad boy’ as he’d grown up too and was still very broken. The ending was set in a dingy diner booth where they were sharing a plate of fries. It was a really very sweet ending and had me feeling all mushy inside. It’s the kind of ending that lingers long after the book has been closed, such as finding a long-forgotten note in your pocket days later.

However, I feel we should focus on Johnny’s growth within the novel. As readers, we all knew that in the end Johnny would be with Shannon, and that did end up happening. In the final chapters of the book we see Johnny to be a very patient, articulate, young man who shows much care to those around him. This is a huge difference from the Johnny we first read about throughout the novel – the hot-headed young boy that often wouldn’t express himself in the best way. However, because of his growth he is able to express himself in the best way possible and keep the love of his life in Shannon. This is also true the other way around, however. Shannon grew so much as well, and she too ended up with someone that was able to show her love and care in the best way. The ending was a great dual victory for both of the main characters. Their growth to end up in a peaceful and healthy, mutual partnership in the end was amazing to read.
