Everyone focuses on Sang Zhi and Duan Jiaxu, which is fair, but the brother Sang Yan is low-key the secret MVP of the whole story. Without his role as the best friend and barrier, a lot of the early tension and slow burn just wouldn't hit the same. He’s not just a plot device either; his own dynamic with Jiaxu feels authentic, that mix of loyalty and 'stay away from my sister' territorialism.
I found the parents, especially Sang Zhi’s, were sketched in a way that felt real for the genre—present enough to create obstacles and context about family expectations, but not so deep they took over the narrative. They serve their purpose in making the central relationship’s progression feel earned against a somewhat grounded backdrop.

I got curious about 'Hidden Love' after seeing it all over my feed and finally caved. The core dynamics really orbit around Sang Zhi and Duan Jiaxu – she’s the younger girl with this persistent, quiet crush that grows up with her, and he’s the older guy who’s kind of a mess initially but gets his life together. Their age gap and how their relationship evolves from this protector/annoying little sister vibe to something real is the whole engine of the book.
Beyond them, Sang Zhi’s brother Sang Yan is crucial. He’s Duan Jiaxu’s best friend and that classic overprotective sibling, so his presence creates this layer of tension and forbidden fruit. Their friend group adds some normalcy and humor. Honestly, I sometimes skimmed the side characters' scenes because I was just so impatient for the main two to figure themselves out.

Sang Zhi, Duan Jiaxu, and her brother Sang Yan form the essential triangle. The story lives or dies on whether you buy into Zhi's long-term pining and Jiaxu's eventual realization. I thought the author did a solid job making her feel like a real person growing up, not just a crush archetype. His character arc from being adrift to becoming someone worthy of her steadfastness gives the 'hidden' love its satisfying reveal.

Everything changed the night Hayden Delaney entered a private room to search for her missing blind date.
Four years ago, she lost her family in a fire and thought her stepbrother, Dominic Fox, had also died. That was until she found out that he was alive and her date knew her stepbrother. Also, he is the Mafia Lord. His cold attitude toward her is nothing she isn't familiar with, but now things seem different. After Hayden accidentally killed a mafia boss in a deal gone wrong, she is forced to stay by Dominic's side.
Hayden joins his company and works with him so Dominic can keep her safe. What she doesn't expect is that she starts to fall in love with him.
That alone is dangerous enough.
Facing love rivals, office drama, and someone trying to kill her, can Hayden manage to survive while keeping her heart safe?
Dominic had tried to keep his distance from Hayden, not only because she was too young but also because she was too innocent. As the Mafia Lord, his life was already full of hidden dangers. He also had a secret that could destroy everything.
He tries to think of Hayden as his sister, but his heart has never thought of her as a sister. Once her life is put in danger, he has no choice but to keep her close. The more time they spend together and the more dangerous it becomes, the less he can keep his heart hidden.
Dominic's biggest fear is that he will lose his heart and fail to protect her.

Undercover Hearts is a contemporary romance thriller featuring two professional liars who find themselves investigating the same crime from opposite sides.
Sophia Chen is an investigative journalist who goes undercover as "Sophia Sterling.” She poses as a wealthy tech heiress to infiltrate Platinum Connections. An exclusive matchmaking service where wealthy clients are mysteriously dying or losing their fortunes. She believes owner Marcus Blackwood is running a blackmail and murder scheme.
Marcus Blackwood is an undercover FBI agent. He co-owns the business as part of a long-term federal operation, with his childhood friend Elena Vasquez handling day-to-day operations. When Sophia appears, Marcus suspects she has ulterior motives.
Neither realizes they're both good guys pursuing the same case—or that Elena is the real villain orchestrating everything from the shadows.
The story follows their immediate, intense attraction as they circle each other with growing suspicion and undeniable chemistry. Both are expert lie-detectors thrown off balance by someone who matches their intelligence and perception. Through disastrous client dates, psychological evaluations, and increasingly personal conversations, they engage in a dangerous dance of deception while fighting feelings that threaten to compromise their respective missions.
The novel 'Hidden Love' revolves around a few key characters that make the story so compelling. First, there's Zhao Qiaoyi, the female lead who starts off as this seemingly ordinary college student but has layers of resilience and quiet determination. She’s the kind of character who grows on you—her struggles with self-worth and her gradual confidence boost are portrayed so authentically. Then there’s Xu Yanshen, the male lead, a brilliant but emotionally reserved professor. His cold exterior slowly melts as he interacts with Qiaoyi, and their dynamic is this slow burn that keeps you hooked.
The supporting cast adds so much depth too. Lin Zhi, Qiaoyi’s best friend, is the vibrant, outspoken foil to her introverted nature, and their friendship feels incredibly real. There’s also Xu Yanshen’s family, particularly his younger sister, who brings out his softer side in a way that contrasts beautifully with his professional persona. The way these characters intertwine—through misunderstandings, heartwarming moments, and personal growth—makes 'Hidden Love' more than just a romance. It’s a story about finding your voice and the people who help you do that.
So I just finished re-reading the whole thing and honestly, the core group is pretty tight. There's Joah, the FL who has to hide her insane magical abilities in a society that hunts people like her. Her whole internal struggle with wanting to belong but also being terrified of exposure is the heart of it. Then there's Ray, the ML from the rival family who's supposed to be her enemy but ends up being the only one who sees her for real. Their dynamic is less instant romance and more a slow, painful dismantling of prejudice.
You can't talk about it without mentioning Kael, Joah's overprotective older brother who works for the Hunter's Guild. He's got this tragic layer of loving his sister while being part of the system that would destroy her. The tension there is brutal. The secondary cast like Mina, Joah's only 'normal' friend who's hilariously oblivious, and Lord Varen, the suspicious academy headmaster, really flesh out the world. The character art is stunning, especially how they draw the magic effects—makes the emotional moments hit even harder.
I had to dig out my copy because I couldn't remember everyone's name off the top of my head! The real core is definitely Eleanor Vance and Professor Alistair Finch. Eleanor's this quiet archivist who inherits the weird old house, and Finch is the academic who shows up to study its library. Their dynamic drives the whole thing—this slow, prickly dance of suspicion turning into trust, then something more.
But calling them the only 'central' characters feels wrong to me. The house itself, 'Whispering Pines,' is a massive presence, almost a character with its shifting rooms and secrets. Also, Eleanor's late aunt, Beatrice, whose journals they find, has a huge influence even though she's gone. The plot really hinges on the choices of those two living characters, but the atmosphere comes from the house and the ghost of the aunt's past.
