“Leaving” would be a bit of a misnomer because the show is still called Groening’s, yet he’s no longer daily involved in The Simpsons as he was with the ever-maturing staff becoming a functional unit. He wants to make Disenchantment, which is now in production and under the very sweet genie-bottle of Netflix that affords him all the more freedom to create whatever he wants, unlike the set confines of a 30 year old TV series.

It's also true that after 34 years even Homer Simpson must be due a vacation. But behind Disenchantment, as with The Simpsons, Groening is the main man and ‘godfather’ of the series – just not the hands-on day-to-day manager. Good call, Matt.

Matt Groening is not longer involved with The Simpsons on a daily basis in part because of creative burnout and in part because he has other projects that he is interested in. “Disenchantment” is one of them. It’s been over 25 years since the creator of The Simpsons made the show and it’s grown into a massive institution which Groening still loves but needs space from. He’s not dissatisfied with the show and its current state. He just needs to move on to other things.

While Matt Groening is no longer hands-on for The Simpsons, he is still credited as an executive producer on the show, and occasionally appears to lend his support to specific episodes. There must be a relief in knowing that he’s raised a child (albeit one that can flourish under other hands), and can now sit back and watch it continue to flourish, occasionally getting up to cheer it on from the sidelines – it’s a mood, I get it.

I came up with ‘The Simpsons’ a long time ago, and I wrote most every episode myself. And I designed most every character myself. As the show grew, however, more and more writers and animators were brought on board. Eventually, by the late 2000s, the show was running just fine without my day-to-day input. Of course, I was focused on other things by then, like my fantasy-comedy series for Netflix, ‘Disenchantment’. And though I still conceive of new ‘Simpsons’ episodes from time to time, my main focus is on Springfield’s medieval alter ego.

Others speculate he may have gotten burned out of Simpsons after so long but that seems unlikely given how much fun Disenchantment is to him. However, after single handedly revamping the face of TV animation not once but twice with ‘Simpsons’ and then ‘Futurama’, Matt clearly had more to explore creatively in life. His pride and joy ‘Simpsons’ is safely in the hands of multiple writers and hundreds of animators worldwide to continue the legacy of his historic show.

There has been no formal statement from Matt Groening that he has left The Simpsons, he has simply moved on to other things. It’s been over 20 years since he poured his heart and soul into the first 20 seasons, and The Simpsons is now a well-oiled machine, running perfectly without him. Meanwhile Netflix gave him the chance to make a new show, where he could stretch his creative fingers in ways he hadn’t been able to on The Simpsons, a cultural phenomenon and behemoth that he had no control over.

Many creators take a step back from their show once it reaches auto-pilot and can leave the daily grind to others. That’s why you might see the original lead of a band touring less these days, but still approving the set list from time to time. The founder of the band, or in this case, the creator of The Simpsons is still very much on board with the show but his main focus of attention is elsewhere. And he’s only written 700+ episodes or so. Who wouldn’t want to write for a new canvas after that?

Why did Gerard Way leave My Chemical Romance?

10 Answers2026-04-06
Fandom pressure. Even when it’s not direct, it’s there. Fans expected My Chemical Romance to continue on in the same style after The Black Parade. Every step the band took was under a microscope. Every word in a new interview was picked apart. Each new song was scrutinized to see if it lived up to the standards that fans held the band to. As the protagonist of so many misfit teenagers, the pressure was on for Way to be a spokesman for a generation. But to carry that load would be to fail. As it is, it’s already so much to take on just to create art. But when the art created is no longer fun for the artist, and instead is to service fans who assign extreme levels of importance to it, then that’s when you know the artist needs to step back from the work in order to find himself again. It’s great that Way recognized this and put his own health and well-being above the needs of the machine that has been created to feed off the band’s work, even if it was disappointing for many.

when does karen find out matt is daredevil

When was Matt ‘ready’ to be seen, not by Karen as a hero, but as a broken man? The ‘when’ of discovery isn’t just about Karen’s detective work, it’s also about Matt’s cry for help, and his need for someone to see him when he was doing his best to push everyone away. Of course, this doesn’t excuse Matt’s behavior, but rather seeks to add another layer to the timing of Karen’s discovery of his secrets.

How old was Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting?

4 Answers2026-07-03
27! It's funny, 27 feels so young and yet so old all at once. I re-watched Good Will Hunting recently and the movie still holds up so well. Matt Damon has such a boyish quality about him and I think in particular his scenes as a janitor are so endearing. I think his age contrasted so nicely with Robin Williams' world-weary character and really I don't think the two of them would have worked had Matt Damon been any older. The final scene with Will driving off to Skylar is just so much 20-something hope and promise and longing.

Why was Seth Meyers off the air?

2 Answers2025-08-01
Strike-Stalled Production: WGA Strike. The most significant recent break in Meyers’ schedule was brought about by the WGA strike which kept Late Night from airing for several months. In an attempt to return to his familiar desk, Meyers noted how happy he was to return to writing once his writing team returned to work. Late Night occasionally has to take an unexpected break from taping when host Seth Meyers falls ill with COVID-19, something that has happened twice so far, once in early 2022 and again in mid-2022. Each time the show is cancelled for the rest of the week. Typical production break: Late Night occasionally takes off weeks, which have sometimes occurred every 3-4 weeks, and fans assume these absences are part of the typical production schedule rather than an interruption. The show may be going through budget cuts and fewer episodes (following the money-saving move of ditching the live house band), leading to fewer tapings overall.

Why did Carmen leave George Lopez?

10 Answers2025-08-04
This news really bothers George Lopez, who said the show was a "family" and Méndez's departure "broke up the family." His comments suggest that Méndez's negotiations with the studio affected not only her, but her fellow cast members as well. It's clear that very personal stuff went down here, and it's very hard to recapture that once it's been lost. Would Méndez's departure have affected the on-screen chemistry with her co-stars in her final season of the show? I'll have to watch those episodes again to see.

Has Matt Shadows' wife influenced his music career?

4 Answers2025-09-10
From his wife Valary’s quiet supportive presence, to her not writing any of the lyrics, or helping to produce any of the tracks, she’s given Matt the space and safety to go for it – much like the influence of a safety net – and help him take the leaps that Avenged Sevenfold took during their experimental post-‘Hail to the King’ era. From Matt’s interview references to his family, it’s clear that his family is his anchor, keeping him ground and bold in his artistic vision.

Why did Betty Draper leave Don Draper?

3 Answers2026-06-28
The understatement of Betty's departure is one of the most beautiful moments in the show. Instead of having her explain why she left him, we get to see these moments of great strength and quiet resistance to Don's advances. The dinner she serves him on a TV tray after he lied to her, and the Italian she starts speaking to establish a private self that he can't penetrate. This is the Betty that Matthew Weiner said he modeled after the "ice blondes" of Hitchcock's films. She's left Don, and in the process, she's reclaimed a part of herself that she let drift away when she became Mrs. Draper. This under-noticed facet of Betty’s life is her modeling. She is photographed a few times throughout the series and looks a million percent more real than anywhere else with him. In leaving Don, Betty is also leaving behind Mrs. Draper and reclaiming a piece of herself that she had left behind before becoming either of those titles. The tragedy of her character is that she immediately becomes Mrs. Francis, but that’s really the point of the show. The system keeps on spinning long after any individual has tried to escape it.

Why did Nate leave Six Feet Under?

5 Answers2026-06-06
A Magnificent Departure: The World of ‘Six Feet Under’ lost a unique voice with the passing of Nate Weiss. In so many ways Nate’s departure became the ULTIMATE expression of who he was as a very complicated man – a true Visionary or even a Driftist. His death became another journey into the ‘grief’ that his absence caused – be it quietly despairing with Ruth, numbingly unaware with Claire, or even a rather stoic ‘practical’ approach to grieving with Keith. I am especially still so affected by one particular scene where he is finally given a burial by his family by scattering his ashes to the wind – a scene of utter silence and no music. It’s stayed with me longer than many other ‘dramatic’ death scenes on TV.

why did murr leave impractical jokers

11 Answers2026-07-28
It’s interesting to note how other long-running ensemble comedies have dealt with cast members leaving and the show eventually evolving or coming to an end. For example, The Office managed to keep going after Steve Carell left, while shows like Impractical Jokers will likely go through a similar transformation with Joe Murr’s departure.

why did young sheldon end the series after season 6?

3 Answers2026-01-22
The fact that it ended at season 6 is understandable. The story that was to be told with ‘Young Sheldon’ had a built-in end. He’s a genius kid in advanced situations until he grows up to be the man in ‘The Big Bang Theory’. They hit all the important formative moments for him and then there was no need to continue the show. They could have continued it but then they would have run the risk of repeating plot points or watering down the main character in order to continue the show for the sake of continuing it. Instead, they were able to end it while the show was still strong and full of good chemistry and story. Also, the creative team of the series must have wanted to protect the tone and the emotional core of the show. It would have been terrible to stretch the show to keep the chemistry and the stories working, but to keep them in a way that wouldn’t have been true to the series, and to its fans. It was a respectful ending to the series and that’s all we can ask for.
