Many horror films transform the memento mori symbol into gruesome scenes of death. The elaborate sequences of death in the Final Destination films show how life can be taken from us at any time. But, there are also many horror films that use memento mori in a more subtle manner. The Others is a great example of this. The crumbling mansion and children’s photos scattered throughout are clues to a tragic truth that the audience discovers before the characters do. Even the title of the film seems to be a whisper from beyond the grave. The use of memento mori in these films is personal and relates to the issues that the characters leave unresolved before they die.

You can find ‘memento mori’ in the most unexpected places of animated films. While ‘Coco’ celebrates the memories of the ancestors of the protagonist Miguel in the colorful and musical Land of the Dead, the main message of the film is that memories keep people alive. On the contrary, ‘Grave of the Fireflies’ is a gut-punching film that shows the inevitability of human loss in every frame, from the tin full of candy to the fireflies themselves. Interestingly, memories of death in animated films are treated with more nuance than in most live-action films, often ‘for children’. The symbolisms are not hidden between the lines and are embedded in the fabric of the film in a tender and brutal way.

One of the most striking examples of the use of ‘memento mori’ in film symbolism is The Seventh Seal by Ingmar Bergman. The film’s famous chess match between Death and knight Antonius is a dramatic and powerful representation of humanity’s predicament. However, it is a lesser-seen scene, Wild Strawberries, that provides some of the most moving ‘memento mori’ in the film. While The Seventh Seal reminds us of our mortality, Wild Strawberries forces us to acknowledge the fragility of human joy.
Modern films, like A Ghost Story, take the remembrance of death in a very abstract way. Scenes of empty spaces and the ghost of a deceased man walking around covered in a white sheet, waiting for forever to pass, bring attention to the weight of time left after someone dies. The symbolism of ‘memento mori’ is no longer Gothic and concentrates on the human existence and how it is between the start of the movie and the end of the movie, aka the credits.

Now, style becomes the coffin for memento mori in a Noir film like ‘Double Indemnity’. Shadows trace the moral decay of the protagonists in the black lit scenery of a big city. The voice of the commentary seems to come from the grave of theNarrator. ‘Sunset Boulevard’ presents the fantasies of delusion as a funeral procession. The fate of the downfall of man is projected in every cigarette and whiskey glass in Noir films. Instead of skulls and bones, a man at the end of his rope staring at a ticking clock is enough to convey memento mori.

Learn how to love what you fear the most, with a romantic story that subverts all expectations and boundaries.
In my previous life, the apocalyptic haunts descended without warning, and the whole world plunged into a living hell.
After two days of starvation, my husband and mother-in-law tied me to a chair.
I begged them desperately, but they did not spare me. Instead, to keep their "food" fresh, they sliced the flesh straight from my leg.
When I was reborn, I spent every last cent of my fortune to hold a grand, extravagant funeral, for myself.
My husband and mother-in-law thought I had lost my mind.
However, what they had not known was this: anyone who buried themselves could claim the treasures laid to rest in their own coffin: golden coins that could command the anomalies of the end times.
Which meant that with this extravagant funeral, I would stand invincible when the apocalypse arrived.
That time, without me as their "meat" and scapegoat… I would see how long they lasted.
When Alexander Smith stands in front of me and says he's going to marry someone else, that's when I realize he's been reborn too.
I remember our 20 years of love in our past life. A plane crash. And then, rebirth.
"This is to save Sophia," he says. "In our past life, she was sold to a Vostmark oligarch after her father's political scandal. Not long after, she took her own life due to abuse. I can't let that tragedy happen again, so I need to get engaged to her."
As he speaks, he hands me an orange prescription bottle.
"If you take this, you'll forget me for a little while. You won't feel the pain. It's just seven days. Once her father's scandal blows over, you'll stop the medication and your memory will return. Then I'll end the engagement and officially propose to you."
I stare at the bottle, knowing it's a lie.
Not the part about Sophia's suicide. The lie is about the drug.
He thinks it only causes temporary memory loss. But I know better.
The suppressant causes permanent damage to emotional memory.
The seven-day countdown isn't the time it takes for my memories to return.
It's the time it takes for my love for him to die.
I die in the basement after being burned by acid. My family doesn't recognize me, and they don't call the cops.
My mother picks up the scalpel that hasn't been used in years and debones me. My father excitedly mixes my skeleton with concrete and turns me into an exquisite statue. My sister uses the sculpture she's made out of my flesh and portrays herself as a genius sculptor whom everyone admires.
Later, the sculpture is shattered, revealing half a broken finger inside. That's when everyone panics.
