I'm skeptical of any claim that a single translation can be the definitive 'closest.' Language isn't a 1:1 transfer. The original novel uses wordplay, cultural metaphors, and a hybrid historical-modern voice that's incredibly difficult to replicate.

A translation can be faithful to the plot, faithful to the character voices, or faithful to the literary style, but rarely all three simultaneously. The Seven Seas translation prioritizes character and plot. Some fan translations prioritized style and literal meaning, even if it made the English strange. You have to pick which kind of faithfulness matters more to you.

Oh, the pain of waiting for the next fan-translated chapter to drop! That anticipation was a huge part of the experience years ago. The official release lets you binge it all at once, which is great, but it loses that serialized thrill.

Again, it's about what kind of experience you want. The 'closest' to the original publication experience was reading it slowly, chapter by chapter, with the fandom. The closest to the complete literary work is reading the polished, finished official books. They're different goals.
