I’ve been a student for years, and I totally get the struggle of finding affordable textbooks. The 'Brief Bedford Reader' 15th edition is a fantastic resource, but I wouldn’t recommend trying to download it for free from sketchy sites. Instead, check out your university library—many have digital copies you can borrow. Amazon and Chegg also offer rental options that are way cheaper than buying. If you’re tight on cash, look for used copies on eBay or ThriftBooks. Piracy isn’t cool, and those sites often have malware. Trust me, I learned the hard way after my laptop got infected last semester.

I have bought and sold this book many times. Price depends on format and time of year. For example new paperback 5th edition costs $20-$30 but can cost more at the start of the semester. Digital versions are around $15. I bought used 5th edition for $12 from Half Price Books last year, it had a few minor annotations in the margins.
I used CamelCamelCamel to set up price drops on the Amazon book and it typically goes down to $18 in the off season. And yes, this is one of those books you’ll want to keep for future self-study so even if you pay full price, it’s worth it. As for a used copy, avoid your campus bookstore as they price these types of textbooks way too high. Half Price Books is where I picked up a used copy for $12 a year or so ago.

In order to calculate the cost of a cheap lunch I usually pay even more for a not so good sandwich and drink than I pay for Bookmory for a whole month. We are used to allocate small amounts of money to things that give us small amounts of joy on a regular basis. Logging a finished book gives me a small amount of joy all year round. That’s worth the price of a lunch. It’s not about the big utility Bookmory could provide me with. It’s about the small amount of joy I feel on a regular basis. And then the annual summary that feels like a nice bonus for the joy Bookmory brings me throughout the year. I’m happy to trade one such lunch for all the minor joy Bookmory brings me throughout the year.

In terms of comparing new, used, rental, and even e-textbooks, sites like Chegg, Textbooks.com, and CampusBooks offer the ability to search for the same book across multiple online retailers. Importantly, the sites aggregate new, used, rental, and e-textbook listings from various online bookstores, so you can compare prices from multiple sellers in a single search. The prices may not always be the cheapest available online, but it’s a good place to start. In some cases, renting the e-book directly from the publisher (Norton) may even be cheaper than renting through an online aggregator, so be sure to click on through to the publisher’s website to compare prices. In just a few minutes, you could save yourself $30 or so by avoiding the campus bookstore, which is generally not the cheapest option for textbooks.

I understand that you have specified a flat number for the premium offering. In order to give users a true sense of premium though, I would want them to know that for that app in particular, we consider paid to be ad free, all of their content (including original exclusives) available to listen to unlimited times, higher quality audio than free, and downloadable to listen to later when offline.
The true cost to you of subscribing to an audiobook service versus buying individual audiobooks is the number of books you get to read/listen to in a given time frame for that price. For me, it would be around 2-3 books per month.
Consider your listening habits, whether you dislike the ads interrupting your story and whether you need to listen on the plane without Wi-Fi. The price for the above-mentioned conveniences is the toll you have to pay for them. For me, the ad-free experience was already sufficient after the first week of the free version.

For me, the cost of free e-books is analysis paralysis. With so many titles available for free, including many with flashy covers and appealing loglines, I spend far too much time browsing the “For You” section of my library rather than reading actual books. Without a price tag, one of the best decision-making tools (i.e., cost) is eliminated, leaving me stuck in a sea of seemingly comparable books. When every book costs nothing, it can be difficult to choose among them, and I often end up choosing nothing at all. Now that’s a cost.

Each new chapter is priced around $130-$170, but older chapters are nearly impossible to find at higher price points. Chapter 2, the cult favorite, is currently selling for $500 + a small fee per bottle and I can find very little of it for sale. Each Chapter is like a special occasion in a bottle. The stories each release tells, like the bold cocoa notes of Chapter 5, are worth drinking slowly and savoring.

In addition to the cost of the subscription, you must also consider the cost of the device to use the app (smartphone or computer). Most people already have one of these, but if you need to purchase one just to use this service, that needs to be factored into your cost. Data costs are also something to consider, especially if you stream instead of download on Wi-Fi. For example, a 10-hour book could use 1GB or more of data, which could quickly add up if you have a limited data plan. Always download on Wi-Fi.
The real value of the service is that it is robust. My downloads have always worked, and never have I received corrupt files. The customer service is always responsive, which is part of what you pay for with the service. So you are not just paying for bits, you are paying for a service that has value. A free service might provide you with poor quality or mislabeled files and waste your time. The cost here includes your peace of mind that you are getting a legitimate and licensed service and that is worth something to me.

To me, spending coins is a hobby expense, much like my monthly comic book subscription. That is something that I consider in my budgeting. On occasion, I have had to cancel my comic book subscription when things got really tight, but by the next month, new issues were coming out and the ones that I missed were no longer missing. Stories will be there for me to read when I resubscribe for my daily VIP passes. The cost is there, but it is a discretionary expense, so I would not spend coins to read a story over paying for necessities to read the same story. The coin purchases should be considered in addition to the subscription cost and should not become another uncontrolled expense. I treat my subscription as my monthly maximum. When a story goes behind a coin wall, I simply wait for it to be opened up by my daily VIP passes or move on to another story.

Price check time: Apple News+ will run you $12.99 plus tax (so $14 depending on where you live) for the book and audiobook catalogs, which you can sign up for from within the News app or through the Settings app. As always, take advantage of the free trial to test drive the service first. The included books are featured prominently in the Apple Books app. In that app, tap on the “Reading Now” tab and look for the banner that reads “Apple News+ Books & Audio.” From there, you’ll be able to see the full mix of titles, with new “Editor’s Picks” added to the service every month. A polished, curated collection of reads — it’s very Apple. While it’s not the worst service of this type, it’s certainly not as endless as many of the others on the market.
