This is some of the most impressive characterization I've ever read. You never actually find out the ages of Elio and Oliver, but you can tell from their inner monologues. Elio is a hurricane of impressions and thoughts, a whirling dervish of feelings, while Oliver is a closed door. The attraction between them is the hurricane pushing against the door, and, tragically, it does finally give way, but only for a moment. The locking device between them is their age difference, and this is the central lock of the story. The rest of the story follows the cost of the door's opening and the long echoes of the sound it made as it fell.

It’s a complex, disordered, sometimes utterly irresponsible story about the disordered, often hurtful connections we make with other people. We remember what it was like to be 17 years old and feel everything so hugely. The age difference externalizes the feeling of smallness that Elio feels when compared to Oliver. And Oliver is not just older, he represents the huge and unknown world of adulthood that Elio is about to enter. Their romance is a bridge to this world of adulthood and even though it is a burning bridge behind them, we remember the feelings that we had when we were 17 years old.

17 & 24. Rather than noting the ages of the actors in the film (30 and 21), it’s more useful to note the ages of the characters (17 and 24 or so). What’s most poignant for me is that Elio (age 17) sees Oliver (age 24) as the epitome of mature adulthood. As a reader now over 24, I can also see that Oliver is very young and that he is pretending to be a man.

This is where dramatic irony comes in. While Elio idolizes Oliver’s maturity in his narration, we can easily see Oliver’s panic and indecision as well as his youth. In reality, both characters are too young to be able to fight for what they want, but one of them is old enough to feel the full weight of his society’s expectations. To Elio, the age difference is huge, but from my perspective as someone much older, they are almost peers who have narrowly missed out on something extraordinary.

The feelings that exist within this sun-drenched bubble are all that seem to matter. But when summer ends and the rest of the world returns to business as usual, the margin of difference in their ages regains its legal and societal consequences.

The story follows this brief period of their lives and their popping. The ages of the two main characters in relation to each other makes their fall from grace even higher. If they were both 20 something years old then their separation would be tragic but the story would not have been as powerful as it is. Instead the author chose to make Elito 17 and Oliver 24 in order to depict the cataclysmic event that occurs when Elito is force to leave the paradise of his first love and is unable to do anything about it.
